Why Coleman didn't play much

When asked about Coleman in the press conference Boeheim said, "We have go to get better down there- defensively - but he did get offensive rebounds."

In my opinion, Boeheim screwed up here. We needed offense and our leading scorer is on the bench. Coleman ties a career high in points and barely sees the floor in the second half. I know we won and Boeheim is huge on playing defense, but no reason why Coleman couldn't have gotten in more. It all worked out though so time to move on to the next one.

I would say that Coleman was more than cancelling out what he gave up on D and when he played woth Grant and CJ he was pretty good other than letting that dude spin off him one time.

He doesn't trust him. And when JB doesn't trust you he doesn't play you in the 2nd half of close games. He doesn't really trust Rak either...

Keita and Rak are not half dominant enough on defense to justify that.

I would love to see how many offensive rebounds each gave up, and how many points resulted in Keita's lazy defense and fouling. I understand people have off nights but that was pathetic. I've never seen the center of a zone look so weak. Thank god for Baye he at least had a redeeming 10 seconds of play with the steal and FTs. Otherwise Baye and Rak killed us tonight.

Colemans boards and points are more important.

I disagree with you. His defense was bad. Yes, he had some tip-ins but if you score and then give up a basket, your team has gained nothing. All our bigs sucked on d tonite. As I said in multiple threads, everyone was overplaying the entry pass into the post and Coleman was really bad at that.

Coleman did a nice job finishing around the rim in the first half, but most of his points were on uncontested tip ins. It's not as though they were feeding him the ball in the paint. He wasn't operating with his back to the basket.

Coleman remains a liability on defense. Keita is a better option in tight games.

At the end of the day, all three of our centers were eaten alive inside. One of them showed up on the offensive side.

Coleman was not good at all on defense in the first half. You win with DE - he needs to play it better or he'll be sitting the bench no matter how well he plays on offense.

I've been screaming for a legit big man coach but Coleman should've figured out how to move his feet on defense... That's on him IMO. He's just lumbering on defense.

You need in game experience. He's shown flashes of brilliance. Rak and Keita have had there whole careers to put it together and they haven't.

Why the hell would we waste another Mcdonalds AA. It's beyond me.

Coleman had a freshman year that resembled EVERY SINGLE big man we've had in the past decade. AO and Rick Jackson included.

Sure it was, at times. They had some freshman power forward -- Martin? -- who was really operating in the high post and down on the block. He drew multiple fouls and converted a bunch of short jumpers.

Give it some time Trueblue! Jb started Coleman last year and then he got hurt. He's starting him again this year. And he played a lot in the 1st half. But his poor defense in the first half and start of the 2nd got him relegated to the bench. He needs to get better in practice and show his progression on de in the game. He did not tonight and I was perfectly fine with JB's decision to play guys who have shown themselves to be better on defense over the last 2 years than Coleman. Simple as that.

He has not been horrible since day 1. He's shown flashes of greatness, albeit against lesser teams. How the hell can a player improve when he sees no time against better competition? Or even extended time when he's earning it.

Also don't forget he was out with a nagging knee injury next year.

you earn your time in practice. Obviously he has not been impressive in practice. Or he would play. And you and I have a big disagreement with the term flashes of greatness. Maybe flashes of being a first string center. No more than that.

Yes, and he did that against Rak/Keita as well from what I saw. Again, I thought our defense was fine. What wasn't fine was our offensive execution most of the game. We also over played some three pointers/pump fakes that lead to offensive rebounds for St. Francis.

I stand by my stance that DC would not have hurt us on D down the stretch as much as people are indicating.

However, it is true he does need to improve his footwork on that end.

Yeah, I thought they all were fairly weak tonight as well. Baye, Rak, Coleman in that order when ranking defensive proficiency tonight. I was surprised at how easily the St. Francis kids were getting around them and establishing position. Although they were using the swim move a couple of times, and a couple times they called us for the foul anyway. Kind of an odd game in that regard - probably had Baye and Rak backing off a bit more than they should have had to. I thought a few of those fouls on each were VERY iffy.
