Why does and East Bracket Play in San Jose?

Not really no. They beat Florida and Okie St. Lost to Gonzaga and Michigan

Yeah, if you listen to Pomeroy (#30), they were way overseeded. But they did tie for first in the Big 12, which has a double round robin, so that's something.

Also Marsh, I know yesterday you mentioned that you thought Asheville from last year was roughly equivalent to Montana this year. Pomeroy was down on and off last night, but I just went on and checked. Asheville was 122nd going into our game last year. Montana is 154th. So actually significantly worse

I agree that they are worse. Asheville was not a 16 seed last year. Should have been a top 15 seed at worst.

Old Man on the Porch here:

I'm old fashioned. I'd prefer regional regionals with the Final Four being between the champions of the East, West, North and South.

 Keep off the grass, you young whipper-snappers!
You remember they use to do that, kept teams within the regions they played in. The problem was that too many WEST coast teams got left out and the East coast had really medicor regionals. Of course this was when UCLA, USC, Arizona, etc got all the NYC talent. Now the shoe is on the other coast. Paper says only 1 NCAA winner outside of the east time zone in decades. Can't believe that. Maybe west of the Mississippi.

protected seeds are not always guaranteed for the 4 seeds. Its more for the regionals
Which doesn't make any sense because it's expected that only the top 4 seeds play in the regionals. Protected from each other?

Let's call a spade a spade. They want big upsets in the first 2 rounds to create tourney buzz... but they want the big $$$ in the regionals from the local teams.

Not exactly. They want the local squads in the first 2 rounds, because too often first and second round games are played in half-empty arenas. But they got into some overkill this year. Either Mich or MSU would fill Auburn Hills. Either KU or KSU would fill Kansas City. And, Cal is going to help them with San Jose.

i think we are out west so Hop can fit in another interview with USC on friday.

Actually I think it's the other way around; they generally try and protect teams in just the first round, maybe the second round.

But Cal-UNLV in San Jose is real weird, especially since they already played thios year.

Actually the reason given was that the West regional was too weak, which is why UCLA won all those national championships: they had an easier road to the Final Four. When they started shifting teams around, they sent eastern teams west, not the other way around. Basketball used to a be a regional sport with pockets of enthusiasm. Now it's a national sport and good teams are everywhere. With truly geographic regionals, more fans could go to their team's games and you'd have great post-season rivalries. The Eastern Regional would have been a Big East-ACC challenge every year.

Better to be a pod in San Jose than be in a pod in Santa Mira.

Yea I dont know why they did this. KState lucked out and got the hometown crowd. I really thought before the show we were in Austin and then during the show I thought we had Marquette's spot in Lexington for sure as the 3 seed. Buzz did it to us again.

Almost every year there are first and second round games in North Carolina. This year there aren't. That hurt us.

If there had been first round games in NC, Duke stays home and we go to Philly with G'town, ie. even as a 4, we would still have been "protected".

This year both Michigan and KSU were protected as 4s.

Sometimes it just boils down to where the sites are and who else is a high seed in your geographic area.

In all honesty...
what does "protected seed" even mean? And, supposedly, the top 4 seeds in each region are "protected seeds," aren't they? What the he11 does that mean?

Four seeds are the last seeds to be protected so if there are no more available slots in your araea to play then you can be moved. Hence San Jose!!!

kansas st was above us on there s curve along with every 4 as were were 16 on there s curve

Once they established their 4 seeds they put them in that order to get good crowds in Aub. Hills w/Michigan and KC with K-St. Since all of SU's preferred pods were locked up it was easy for them to say we were #16 to ship out west.

i am pretty sure the Chairman said last night that they stopped using the S-Curve a couple years ago.

they dont use an s curve but they still rank the teams 1-68 and kansas state was above us

at a 4 seed i dont think anyone would have complained if we were higher on there ranking but not given auburn hills. i also seriously doubt thats what they did since the committee really wants the brackets as balanced as possible. We got san jose because we were given a favorable slot travel wise in east regional(along with saint louis in midwest),michigan and kansas state have lots of travel if they make it to sweet 16 while we are pretty close so they got the closer to home 2nd and 3rd round site .
