Why don't we have a thread for The Challenge?

Just got done watching episode zero of the new season. Was a bear to find. On YouTube TV I had to scroll through all of the seasons to get to extras, and then it was there as an option.

Some of the new people look interesting.

It's a fat CT season. Also, they are doing CT's pro tips. Keep 'em coming.

They had a shadow box kind of thing where the vets would pop up very dramatically while the newbies were getting interviewed by TJ, and they asked "why are you here?" It was cheesy as Hell, and the only thing that could have made it better would have been if it was sponsored by Burger King.

It took like two minutes to hear audio of Rogan saying his back hurt. Amazing.

Nia climbed the mountain in jeans.

They're doing a weird thing that makes the person's eyes in the confessional look strange. Hate it.

There's definitely some UK alliance type stuff brewing, which I think is good for the show. Way better than when people cluster alliances around the shows they were on (looking at you Big Brother).

Johnny is playing a horny game, and at his age and with his wins, I mean, why not? Looks like this season is leaning into the polidicking, and honestly, there's room for that.

There are some sleeper pairs - Turbo/America, Derrick/Leka, Cara Maria/Jake, Sydney/Leroy.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this is going to be a strong season.
Haven’t watched yet. Hopefully ct can hang around for most of the season.

He's going to have to buy enough time to get his Shaq-like "get in shape during the season" thing going, but who wants to risk going into an elimination with him?

I like the old timers still showing up, primarily because they actually have personalities beyond ‘wannabe influencer’, however -

1. Johnny Bananas looks like Frank Grillo’s dumb little brother. All roided out and unkempt.

2. CT looks like Jared, pre-Subway.

3. Rogan had been gone for years. How is it possible that he hasn’t learned anything and he is still a sex pest?

Who could have predicted that Rogan would be a week 1 loser?
Nobody saw that coming.
Nobody.

So after episode 0 I was certain that this would be a great season, and after episode 1 I have concerns and lots of thoughts.

The worst seasons share some characteristics in terms of game play. The biggest problem is when the political game makes good performance meaningless because only daily challenge winners get any independent influence over the game. It's not fun seeing the same people get thrown into elimination over and over again. There needs to be some sense of meritocracy in The Challenge. The idea that Rogan, WHO CAME IN LAST, got to pick his elimination opponent is just stupid. HE CAME IN LAST.

I'm going to be annoyed if Justin, who finished in the top half of the daily and scored a point (whatever those are going to mean) with Nia and followed that up with a convincing elimination victory gets thrown to the wolves again because politically it's the smart ie scared play to not make new enemies and just vote in the person or duo that it's already been decided it's ok to pick on. The Challenge games makers used to mitigate this kind of thing by giving some advantage to elimination winners, like protection for a round, or I think they even had a double counted vote one season, or "the bomb" or whatever that was.

Maybe changing partners is the hedge against that. Maybe. That's something I'm watching for.

I think the cast is good. Right mix of vets with history plus newbies that can actually compete. It's on the games makers' shoulders to create the right incentives in the game. Their strategies have been mixed lately.

Season is decent enough through a couple. Some of these rookies are very not ugly.

The point system has potential, hope they do something good with it, like the top points total people make the finals. I'd make a couple tweaks though:
  1. Award points further down the pecking order than the top 8 (although they probably did some analysis to show this is the best level to use); swapping partners should eventually produce a nice spread in points thru the cast.
  2. Give more points to the elimination winner. Not sure, but I think they only get 2 points. I'd make it at least 5.
  3. Elimination winners receive all points accrued by whoever they defeated. If the point standings are used to qualify for the final, this will make for interesting votes.
  4. Each player who votes for the winner of an elimination receives 1 point. Might have to tweak the last place is automatically in rule to accommodate this, but maybe not. Just let players burn their vote and select the automatic contender if they want.

They've done number 3 before. Can't remember which season, but part of the advantage of knocking someone out was that you stole their points.

I don't recall a points system before off the top of my head, but I'd still put everyone's points up for grabs in the eliminations even if they've done it before. Are you thinking of seasons when you needed a skull to qualify for the final and you could steal them by eliminating a skull holder?

Also, have they given any indication on if/when you can select a partner that you've had before? They'll have to allow it at some point as the contenders dwindle or switch it up to a singles game. Maybe it's just you can't go with the same person twice in a row?

Ah, should clarify, the concept was similar but it wasn't points. There was a season where they could win bonus money that I think was guaranteed once they made it to the final, and was added to whatever they won for placement in the final. But they won that individually and if a player got eliminated it went to the person that took them out.

Not sure if folks have stuck with this season, but it's been the best in a long time IMO. Even some shades of the old school messiness here and there.

These rookies have been an awesome addition.

I need to watch tonight's episode but I agree, it's been a strong season and they finally got some interesting new people in.

Nany brining back the old school way of going about things.

In terms of the new people, this is such a good crop. Sydney (villain potential), Leka (strong overall), Dee (crafty and competitive, also, not ugly), Tay (almost seems too nice for The Challenge, kinda like Horacio), America (reminds me of Corey in the sense that she seems to really appreciate being a part of The Challenge and grateful for the chance to be on TV), Adrienne (sneaky decent competitor), and Izzy (I don't mind watching attractive people on TV) are all female cast members that would be good to bring back.

Cedric, Yerami, Justin and Leo (tremendous wildcard weirdo potential) all seem like nobrainers to keep casting. Gabe has the physical side down and can probably figure out the rest with more seasons. Jake works as the nondescript Brit.

This is the best infusion of fresh meat that a) actually competes and b) isn't super annoying (LOOKING AT YOU, BIG BROTHER COHORT WITH JOSH, FESSY AND KAYCEE).

It really is a solid group. I think they were helped by the number of them and the rules so they got to be a little safer than back in the day where rookies were just automatically going in and couldn't do anything about it.

Well, we've got a final.

Not at all who I would have thought would make it, but it was a really competitive season.

I feel like the recap episode(s) are going to be really strong. Lotta drama this season.

I have been watching it when I have time. Its been a good season. MTV needs to stop bringing nany, She is just so whiny. Aneesa also. I just don’t think there is future for this show without the real world feeder. I like how you knew who they were. Now I have no idea and I guess That’s why I’m starting to care less about the show. I mainly watch for the vets and now all everyone does it go after them first and I feel the show loses something as they go. Hopefully next season bananas and ct come back in shape and give us one last good run.

Counterpoint - Nany's crazy hot.
