He can't dribble from there - his shot is not much of a threat - and he's not much of a passer

We have the perfect guy for this spot and his name is CJ Fair

I agree with CJ being ideal, problem is that would put Grant in the corner, where he'd really be useless because he's not a threat to shoot from out there.

Grant is not a good finisher...yet. He is extremely athletic and is good at drawing fouls. I haven't seen any sort of left hand either.

Of any coach in the country, wouldn't you agree that we have the coach that knows how to beat a zone better than any coach in the country?

Larranaga use a man at the FT line to either double the ball handler or double high post man with the guard at the top. It was a smart move. Going forward Tyler will need to play it differently than he did. Late in the game we started quickly feeding the ball from the top of the key to the post but early on we missed it a lot. Miami gave trevor the open 3 a lot which should have buried them. The two options they gave us we didn't always use and couldn't capitalize on. It was very good coaching by Larranaga I thought.

Coach larranaga isn't a good coach. He is a great coach.

Fair catches it a little above the FT line and is his shooting 65% unless u r all over him - then he can pass - all Grant did all day was hand it off and play into the slow pace UM wanted to play (Grant hit one jumper from there and it was pivotal in the win) - Grant is no threat there - Grant is the guy catching a pass from CJ and finishing near the rim

Agree with this, although with the Cj/Rak/Grant frontcourt there is noone else for the job. CJ plays the low wing, and has proven very effective, whist Rak plays the opposite side. Cj is also much more effective facing the basket than he is around the rim (ie. Grant). If Roberson can improve, he would be a perfect ploy for the position, but that wouldn't be this season. Besides, the high post is mainly Rak's position, but until Coleman gets back it wont work. Grant does need to work on his mid-range though.

You know I agree but it seemed today that the guy at the foul line with Fair bottled him up

read my point about what miami was doing. it prevented CJ from being able to work from the high post one on one the same it did for grant. Jerami really needs to show the ability to hit that jumper consistently as he can get it often. Has not hit it much so far this year.

agreed that is the appropriate adjective. He will have them being a pain in the ACC's ass all year. They might finish at the bottom but it won't be from getting blown out night in night out.

CJ can do way more damage there than 20 feet from hoop. Best post of the year and I totally concur.

There were two defenders there all game. How was he supposed to get the ball there more?

CJ can catch a simple entry lob pass from Ennis and then turn around and face the basket. Then either shoot the foul line jumper, pass it to Rak or Jeremi, or drive to the hoop, or back to the guards if nothing is there. Rinse. repeat. We do this with Jerami all the time, but CJ is better suited at that spot. OK? That's how he gets the ball there.

Not against the defense we played today. Against a traditional zone yes. Miami was playing to take away the high post all day. So today that would not have worked and it failed when JB tried it. The open spots were rak posting up and cooney on the wing. Larranaga had them setup to force us to make the tough pass into the post against the zone or shoot from the outside. Once trevor was clearly off the mark they closed off the high post even more. The lob would have had to been in no mans land between the high post and low post.

did you not watch the game? It wasn't open when CJ was there.

Jerami caught it there quite a bit today, we disagree and you certainly don't know what JB was trying to do and if it failed.

He caught it 20ft out and had zero room to operate. Not sure what game you were watching but there was no room to operate between the guard squeezing the high post man as did the guy playing the high post. Sure the ball got there once or twice but there was nothing that could be done with it once there. CJ being there would have done nothing like it didnt do anything the few times he did get it there. And of course I didn't know what jb called in the timeout but I could easily see as we tried to find jerami and cj there that getting them the ball in the high post was something they were trying to do.

I disagree with you about Grants passing. His offensive skills are lacking but he has shown to be a very good passer from the high post. He has made some very good passes into the post and to the wings from the high post. If you look back at some of our games he has made some tough high/low passes into Christmas this year.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about Miami's D in this tread.

Miami played a 2-2-1 match up zone. The high post is not an open/important place to be against a 2-2-1 like it is against our 2-3 (actually its just the opposite, there are two defenders right there).

When Grant was in the high post against Eastern Michigan (who plays 2-3) he was great.

Grant was in the high post today for spacing, and not because it was an open spot for him. He looked open because they were giving him room to shoot and trying to stop him from penetrating. He should have shot more and drove less.

If Fair was in the high post, there would have been a guy right in his face (as their always was). So moving him there wouldn't have accomplished anything.

Against EMU's 2-3, Grant and Roberson playedthe foul line area. I saw Grant make som fantastic passes from there to Cooney and CJ. He is also a threat to drive a one or two bounce to the rim and turn you into a poster.

Because CJ's strength is his lateral dribble, Grants strength is a explosive straightline one its that simple.

CJ has a very confident jumper from the corners which helps this team spread the floor, adds a scoring threat in the corners that you can't leave open, and helps our ball movement. JB always puts the senior forwards further away from the basket, its part of how you grow as a forward at syracuse. A position like that is a isolation basket, and Grant blowsby straightline better from the middle of the floor, and finishes a inch or two taller at the rim even with CJ havig a pullup that Grant doesn't.

I would like to see us run a play to get cj wide open 1-2 steps right inside the fouline though, as his floater is so light and has a good chance to bounce in, especially if its straight at the rim instead of a 35 degree angle. Running one off something like a Gbinije screen with Gbinije/or Grant rolling backdoor, would be a nice mismatch play to look into.

We saw way to much isolation against miami and a big part of that was all of ennis passing being entry passes, and fair and grant when they received it had to take the defense one on one every play they never got a step on them before receiving the pass. Miami took away our halfcourt transition offense for the first 15 minutes of the second half and our oustide shots weren't falling on top of it.
