Is this you donniesyracuse?

To the Editor:

Why do the Syracuse University football coaches, starting with Doug Marrone, insist on wasting practice time to go to Fort Drum? The week could have been sorely used to get ready for what we hope to see as an improvement.

On the sports news they showed the players doing close order drill with a cadreman. Then lunch with the soldiers' families, then they reported they were able to "get up on the big trucks and equipment." They even get to to disassemble a rifle.

I'm sure Nick Saban and Les Miles are upset because they never thought of this; they have to make a team on their own.

Want to honor our troops? Give free tickets to Fort Drum and then possibly fill the Dome.

I'd venture to guess we're getting the exact same time of on field practice time which is the max allowable on a given day. The non football/military drills would simply be in addition to it and guys still have weights to lift and the ability to run as well.

I assure you, we're getting our NCAA alotted football time on the field.

People just don't understand this
A football coach is never going to sacrifice practice time. Some coaches will do a day where instead of a walk through you have a BBQ, or a pool party or something to get the kid's minds off football. But, any coach worth their sand, will be utilizing all practice time allowed to them by the NCAA.

I'm guessing whomever wrote that letter never played football at any organized level to know that coaches are only X amount of on field practice on a given day depending on the time of year.

I think most people live in such a bubble they dont realize how many schools do this stuff, others go away to practice. kids go to movies, the beach, the pool things to take the mind off of football.

I love the "minimize distractions" by staying home. They don't have cell service up there or X-boxes or girls, etc. They are more distracted at home.

Seriously. You minimize distractions by getting away. Look at the NFL when they move their training camp out of town for 2 a days so they can focus just on football, not to mention team building. Our losing has absolutely nothing to do with going to Ft. Drum. Our best team in the past 15 years was one that went to Ft. Drum. I hope to see us continue this tradition for the foreseeable future.

Syracuse.com shining bright again as always. Keep printing the non-fans who have nothing but negativity in their blood and people will keep making them the " most read newspaper website in the U.S." or whatever their garbage claim to fame is.

That's because the P-S only home delivers 3 issues a week (Tues - Thurs - Sun).

You're forced to visit the website the rest of the week if you want the news.

People in CNY need to bitch about something. The weather has been too good for the past week.

We have the amphitheater, Destiny, a badly placed ballpark, and 120" of snow right around the corner so we have plenty to be pissed about. I seriously want to put a muzzle on anyone bitching about the football team before we even play a game!

I've got the practice schedule for the team at the D3 where I work. On days that aren't 2-a-days, they practice 3 hours and are in meetings the rest of the time, with about a 3 hour open gap after lunch. There's absolutely a LOT less on-field work than people probably assume.

3 hours were max in HS for me as well with double sessions for 2 weeks of preseason. 2 a days would be 3 hours morning, shower/lunch/film/downtime, 3 hours evening in preseason.

There are some locals I know (not on this board), who complained when we scheduled Stony Brook for 2012. And I'm not referring to that issue where we weren't sure if it would qualify for a bowl eligible win based on the size of their team. I'm talking about people who just bashed that we'd schedule someone so easy.

We had Northwestern, USC, Minnesota, Mizzou on the non conference schedule already. I just remember telling a couple of them "you just don't get it" and realized it wasn't worth any more of my time to try to explain it.

Now we'll have 1 "Power 5" team, 2 MAC's and an FCS ... and people will still complain.
