Why is Syracuse playing soldier instead of football?

There are some locals I know (not on this board), who complained when we scheduled Stony Brook for 2012. And I'm not referring to that issue where we weren't sure if it would qualify for a bowl eligible win. I'm talking about people who just bashed that we'd schedule someone so easy.

We had Northwestern, USC, Minnesota, Mizzou on the non conference schedule already. I just remember telling a couple of them "you just don't get it" and realized it wasn't worth any more of my time to try to explain it.

Yeah, people still seem not to get the whole "one FCS team a year counts toward bowl eligibility" thing.

Yep, keep scheduling one FCS per year until they no longer count for bowl eligibility. Hell, look at Alabama's schedule this year: they play Middle Tennessee, Louisiana-Monroe, and Charleston Southern. I realize they play a brutal conference schedule, but still. I don't get fans who have always acted like it's beneath us to play smaller schools.

Won't respond over there, but as everyone knows, spent 4 years in the service from 64-68 so people like Don could complain, and He's welcome. To me anytime a university has the opportunity to do something with the Military, I applaud them. Well done, Doug, Scott, and all the coaches and players.

Well if you follow their logic we should be playing Alabama, USC Penn State and Notre Dame in addition to the ACC schedule. The players and coaches should be sequestered 24 hours a day talking nothing but football.

To the Editor:

Why do the Syracuse University football coaches, starting with Doug Marrone, insist on wasting practice time to go to Fort Drum? The week could have been sorely used to get ready for what we hope to see as an improvement.

On the sports news they showed the players doing close order drill with a cadreman. Then lunch with the soldiers' families, then they reported they were able to "get up on the big trucks and equipment." They even get to to disassemble a rifle.

I'm sure Nick Saban and Les Miles are upset because they never thought of this; they have to make a team on their own.

Want to honor our troops? Give free tickets to Fort Drum and then possibly fill the Dome.

Mr Blum, guess you didn't get to play both football or soldier. What a poor boy...

You absolutely win this thread. Thank you for your service

That's because the P-S only home delivers 3 issues a week (Tues - Thurs - Sun).

You're forced to visit the website the rest of the week if you want the news.
Whoa whoa whoa...noone is calling that garbage news.

What a dope

It's unfortunate people are so uninformed these days.

First off, the coaching staff is getting their work in with the players. Just because they are doing teambuilding activities like rappelling down walls and learning about 50 cals, doesn't mean they aren't busting their ass for this season during the practice periods. Hell, it's a lot better they are doing those things in their "off-time" than playing video games and out getting in trouble.

Not sure how many people realize (Mr. Blum especially) how bad this staff and these kids want to win. They have absolutely busted their asses since the BC game last year. I mean relentlessly. For some curmudgeon to blast them in a LTTE about spending a few days up at Ft Drum is . Fortunately and unfortunately, this team is getting no credit this year and every talking head out there are anticipating another dismal season. The team is using this as fuel. Hopefully that fuel turns into wins.

To hell with the haters.

Man that is what I was hoping was happening. Doubt them in every game and have them use it as fuel. "Tackling Fuel." :)

Scary time to be in the service. I agree, I love that they go to Ft. Drum. Thanks for everything you have fought for. The fact he is able to express his opinion is because of people like you

I spent 22 years in the Air Force and deployed to Desert Storm (Muscat, Oman) and Operation Enduring Freedom (Kandahar, Afghanistan) and several other deployments in between. First off, thank you for your service Baggerbob and all the other veterans on this board. There are so many people who just have no idea how many sacrifices our military and their families go through every day. I will post a phrase that was put on Facebook by one of the guys I served with at Griffiss from 89-95. This sums it up pretty well.

"Oh, you're in the military? That's cool. I wanted to do that when I was a kid. What do you make? (I always love this question). What do I make? I make holding your child's hand possible everyday. I make 5 minutes seem like a life time. I make going to war for your freedom a duty that I will die for. I can make sure your children have a future before terrorists attack us. I can help you by spending a year away from my family, while you complain about yours and your job. I make myself get out of bed at 3 am (0-dark thirty!) to risk my life to save your freedom. Today, I might make the ultimate sacrifice to save your life. I make a difference. Now, what do you make?"

So I say anytime some one, or in this case the SU football team can give back to our military in any way possible, I am all for it. Kudos to SU for starting this tradition!!

Fantastic, and you explained serving better then I did, and Thank You for 22 years, and I also thank all the veterans who served.

We have the amphitheater, Destiny, a badly placed ballpark, and 120" of snow right around the corner so we have plenty to be pissed about. I seriously want to put a muzzle on anyone bitching about the football team before we even play a game!

Im excited about the Amphitheatre. I cannot fathom anyone that would be against it, other than The Nation whom have environmental reasons due to Honeywell.

I feel like it's a colossal waste of resources, taxes in this state are high enough already. This baloney about not being able to book grandstand acts was nothing more than Joanie and her entourage treating the public like we are morons. They had no problems booking acts until this year when they were trying to tell everyone how great the amphitheater is. I don't believe for one second that they couldn't book acts. They got Snoop Dog for Chevy Court. Take a look at some of his other shows and see how many tickets he sells. Probably would have sold out the friggin grandstand. Megan Trainor is another one that had grandstand written all over it. Steve Miller band as well. Fact is the grandstand was a big part of the fair. It meant business for the vendors, both before and after the show. Moving the concerts off-site and having to take a shuttle will certainly discourage people from grabbing that sausage quick after the show. They want to 'reunite' Syracuse by ripping down 81, but they just split the fair in half using 690. Wrong project, wrong location.

This is exactly the reaction PS wants .. they pick the most inane rants, post them and then count the hits. Of course "Blum" doesn't get it -- that's why they selected his rant.

I think you are way off target here but i respect your opinion. Syracuse needed an up-to-date venue for major concerts. Grandstands are a thing of the past, and the one at the fair was atrocious and most major acts had no interest in playing there anymore, with the exception of country acts. You would never catch Phish, DMB, Zach Brown Band, or any real act go to a place as dated and pathetic as the grandstand ever again. Rush was the last real act to play there, and they only played there because they wanted to play Syracuse before the end of their career..and that was the only venue big enough. This will turn out to be one of the best things to happen to Syracuse in a very long time.

I agree. So far this year I've been to SPAC and last night went to Darien Lake to see Van Halen - this is a show that should have played here but Syracuse has never had a decent venue for these acts. Think of all of the sales tax money that we're not getting because these shows pass us by.

By the way, Darien Lake is way outdated and dumpy. SPAC and CMAC are nice but way off the beaten path, there really isn't any easy way to get to any of these venues. With the Lakeview Amphitheater right off of 690 and being a first class facility Syracuse is going to blow those places away. It's about friggin time
