- Do the math: Minnesota is 8-4 and we are 6-6. They beat us last year when we had a better team than we do now. They beat both Penn State and Northwestern, who we lost to.
- More math: They scored 26 points a game and gave up 22. We gave up 26 points a game and scored 23. They were better in 3rd down conversions on offense, turnover margin and pass defense, all important stats.
- We had 90 penalties for 751 yards, (106th and 112th in the nation, respectively). They had 49 for 404 yards, (10th/12th). They “control the controllables” a lot better than we do.
- We are beat up, even by the standards of teams that have played 12 games. Adrian Fleming, Ross Krautman, Keon Lyn, John Raymon and Becket Wales, all starters, are out for the season. Durell Eskridge and Julian Whigham, two key defensive backs, are out. Durell is also key to our run defense. The only guy out who didn’t play much is Tyler Marona. Prince Tyson Gulley, Jarrod West and Brisley Esteem will be back but are the 100%? It’s hard to pull off an upset when you are so far from full strength.
- Nobody who saw us again Northwestern, Clemson, Georgia Tech or Florida State would think we even had a chance in this game. Minnesota had one really bad loss, 13-42 at Michigan. But that was when Coach Kill was out due to his seizures. The Wolverines were undefeated and ranked #19 at the time and they only outgained the Golden Gophers by 67 yards so it was really the kind of blow-out we suffered four times.
- We have a young coaching staff, with many of them, including the head coach in their first year in their new positions. Minnesota has a veteran staff. That should help them in preparing for a bowl game.
- Supposedly they are bored with having to go back to the same bowl game they went to last year. As bored as we were in the Pinstripe Bowl last year after having been there in 2011. We were bored enough to win 38-14.
