why stadium deals are so secretive

And yet somehow the Braves managed to win about 47 NL East titles in a row despite playing in that ancient dump.

Truly amazing.

Been there 2x, its sucks to no end. Train to a bus, in this day and age, yeesh...

now you are putting words in my mouth to try to make me look stupid. i never called the stadium ancient, nor a dump. i said the area is a horrific wasteland of poverty that is embarrassing to bring out of town guests to.

You should go to Yankee Stadium.

;)

Doesn't everyone in Atlanta drive?

As a visitor, it was the the worst sports experience I have ever had.

And the Mets traded Kazmir while I was there... :bat:

But it sucks, to no end sucks.

But how do any of the factors you cited relate to the Braves' income?
Attendance, ad dollars, sponsors, etc. at the height of glavine/smoltz/Maddox they couldn't sell out playoff games. That impacts what delta, coke, autotrader and every other sponsor pays.

Picture getting off the train at 162 street, then take a shuttle bus to Yonkers.
getting robbed by rich guys sucks worse.

it sounds like it would be a great investment for the braves to pay for their own new stadium in a better location

Kind of a catch 22. Can't have graft if everybody knows what's going on but on the other hand if everybody knows every detail things usually take forever to get done.

The story of the Atlanta Stadium illustrates that there is no such thing as a private stadium. It's all about the surrounding area. What happens is always the public's business.

Agreed, the deal is a joke.

Just pointing out the current location is a horrible baseball experience.

The Braves should do us all a favor and just fold.

It's funny to me that it's just completely out of the question for a team to decide to fund its own stadium/arena.

There is always some municipality willing to pay, and the team will always find a study stating that it's for the public good.

Not entirely. Bob Kraft built Gillette Stadium with his own money. State of Mass. kicked in for infrastructure improvements around the stadium, which as a Foxboro native were about 30 years overdue and entirely justified.

I think the SF Giants built PacBell on their own dime too.

It can be done, but these bastions of capitalism prefer to be subsidized by our socialist government.

I think the Yankees got some super low financing but I think they paid the bills.

Wait, really?

Just reaffirms their greatness.

Please.

Thank Bloomberg for that, not some magnanimous gesture on the part of the Yankees..

The team had cut a sweetheart deal with Giuliani to have the city pay a ton of the stadium's construction costs. Bloomberg backed out of that when he became mayor and made them pay for it themselves.

I think the city ( and state?) kicked in big bucks toward infrastructure updates.

Couple hundred million I believe. As opposed to more than that AND the billion that Guiliani was going to pay for the stadiums.

And ironically the billionaire is the one that chops off the sweetheart deal...
