Why Syracuse will win

- FCS was created in 1978 , (as Division 1AA). We have never lost to an FCS team:
(McNeese State was 1A in 1979 as was Colgate in 1981- both dropped down to 1AA in 1982)
1982 Syracuse 49 Colgate 15
1987 Syracuse 52 Colgate 6
2002 Syracuse 63 Rhode Island 17
2008 Syracuse 30 Northeastern 21
2009 Syracuse 41 Maine 24
2010 Syracuse 38 Maine 14
2010 Syracuse 42 Colgate 7
2011 Syracuse 21 Rhode Island 14
2012 Syracuse 28 Stony Brook 17
2013 Syracuse 54 Wagner 0
2014 Syracuse 27 Villanova 26 (2OT)
2015 Syracuse 47 Rhode Island 0
2016 Syracuse 33 Colgate 7
2017 Syracuse 50 Central Connecticut State 7
2018 Syracuse 62 Wagner 10
2019 Syracuse 41 Holy Cross, (coached by Bob Chesney) 3
2021 Syracuse 62 Albany 24
2022 Syracuse 59 Wagner 0
2023 Syracuse 65 Colgate 0
That’s 19-0, 864-212, an average of 45-11. Four of them have been close, the last a decade ago. FCS teams haven’t even scored in the last two games. We may be due for a close one, (I doubt it), but we’ll still get the job done.

- Three FBS teams haven’t stopped Kyle McCord from throwing for 1,074 yards and 10TDs in three games. What’s he going to do against an FCS defense.

- Fran Brown and LeQuint Allen are determined to get our running game going in this game and I think they will.

- It’s time for Fadil Diggs and his pals, (including Tank Wilson, who is back) to really dominate an opponent. And it’s time to win the turnover battle.

- We’re going to gain yards in any punt exchange, (see below). Hopefully, though there won’t be too many of them.

- Malachi James. Tick…tick…tick…

2-1 and 9 + to go!

LET’S GO ORANGE!

DEFENSIVE 3RD AND 4TH DOWN PERCENTAGE SU- 37.50 HC – 45.90
DEFENSIVE RED ZONE POINTS SU- 38/11 = 3.45 HC– 79/16 = 4.94
KICKOFFS THAT WERE RETURNED SU- 2/18 = 11.11% HC - 17/21 = 80.95%
OPPONENT KICKOFF RETURNS SU- 15.50 HC – 18.00
OPPONENT PUNT RETURNS SU- 2.67 HC – 6.67
NET PUNTING SU- 43.18 HC – 31.35
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE SU- #59 HC - #75 (FCS)
(Everybody has their own system for this: I used this page as a source: NCAA College Football Strength of Schedule Rankings & Ratings For Holy Cross, I used this guy’s ranking: Brian's 2024 College Football FCS Power Ratings )

We pass a lot more and very effectively, even if our yards per catch and attempt are much lower and we score more points. We actually get more yards per run, (after you take out sacks). We do better on 3rd and fourth down and in the red zone, defend the pass better and we’ve got a big edge in punting. That 17 Holy Cross kickoffs have been returned this year should be of interest to Malachi James. I don’t think they have anyone who can catch him.

The bottom line is that our stats have come against HBS teams and two of them against ACC teams. Theirs have come against FCS teams.

Stats that were (relatively) even:
OFFENSIVE PASSING EFFICIENCY SU- 158.76 HC – 157.00
OFFENSIVE COMPLETION PERCENTAGE SU- 67.18 HC – 64.81
TACKLES FOR A LOSS ALLOWED SU- 12 HC - 14
BLOCKED KICKS ALLOWED SU- 3 HC - 3
(I’m assuming blocked kicks are placekicks and added them to blocked punts. The NCAA stats say we’ve had two blocked kicks and one blocked punt. I remember a blocked kick and a blocked punt vs. Georgia Tech. I don’t recall the other blocked kick but I put it in the above stat anyway because the NCAA had it.)
SCORING DEFENSE SU- 25.30 HC – 25.50
DEFENSIVE FIRST DOWNS SU- 22.00 HC – 20.00
DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS SU - 0 HC – 0
KICKOFF RETURNS SU- 21.50 HC – 21.90
FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE SU- 3/4 = 75.00% HC – 4/6 = 67.67%
EXTRA POINTS MISSED SU- 0 HC - 0
PENALTIES SU- 6.00/54.00 HC – 6.50/60.00yds
TIME OF POSSESSION SU- 30.56 HC – 29.34
