Wildhack Tidbits

Damn, truth be told, I loved that train whistle.

I kinda liked it too! I'd love if they switched uniforms after every touchdown (i kid i kid).

Wildhack thinks like a guy who is catering to many masters and is trying to make it enjoyable for all. We're lucky to have him.

More band to me is the most important part of this.

To the band folk, does the school actually recruit unique instruments when applicants mention being in a marching band or playing tubas, etc? Reason I ask is because my son actually plays the euphonium and I wonder if this is something that a band director would look for when he goes to college.

It's more of a sign up thing than a recruiting thing. In the Big 10, they have alternates and such because everyone wants to be in the band. At SU, they accept a pulse.

As a former "Crow", I recall many great memories carting the bell to home and some away games, including the Polo Grounds. Always good for sideline tickets and impressing dates.! Go Orange!

Yeah, pretty much this.
If you play a band instrument, and wish to be in SUMB, they pretty much welcome you with open arms, since folks aren't exactly beating down their doors to do so.
It's a fairly huge time and effort commitment to be in the band, for what is a 1 credit course.
I did it for 2 years, and that was plenty.

I know that there were band members from Lemoyne and OCC to fill spots. With marching band so huge in CNY, hope they can give incentives to recruit and keep marching band members.

John Wildhack on Axe yesterday...

"We want to feature the band more ... provide that collegiate feel"

"I don't know how many years it's been, we scored a touchdown we had that train whistle, we are replacing that with a victory bell. I just think that's much more collegiate spirit and feel."

"We really want to emphasize after we score, the fight song. Get all our fans and students to sing the fight song"

"Season ticket holders we have an email the day before the game... giving them the game day rundown with when the parking lots open quad opens ... the national anthem .. team run out etc"

"New team entrance video and player profiles"

"Season ticket holders leave the dome they'll have an email where they can watch the press conference OR game highlights."

"We want to make the fan experience and improve upon it every year, it's never ending. I think we've made progress this year and i hope the fans take advantage of those opportunities. We get consistent feedback from out fans and that's valuable"

Replace fight song with "hey song" and then you're on to something :)

Like others said, the SUMB is all volunteer and I believe they'll still take anyone who can play. Back when I was there it was daunting to march on the same field as an Ohio State, who had 800 students try out for a 250 person band. SU would be at 175-200 in total taking everyone who wanted in.

I marched for 4 years and it was a fantastic experience. Yes it is an enormous time commitment, back in my day we rehearsed Mo-Th for 2-3 hours, plus Friday's before home games for 2-3 hours. That went on from the first week of school through the end of the season. You don't do it for the course credit. I met all my best college friends there, and we're still very close today, 20+ years later.

To be fair, I marched from 1991-94, so I got to see us beat some incredible teams, and I got to travel all expenses paid (with per diems) to the Hall of Fame Bowl in Tampa and the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe. Sadly it's been near 2 decades since band kids got a similar ride.

It pisses me off to no end when people here rip on the band. It's fine if band music ain't your thing (although SU fans are practically alone in being too cool for marching band in the P5 landscape) and no one would argue that the SUMB is equal to Ohio State or USC. But those kids invest a sh!ton of time, a lot more than anyone here does as a fan.

Ha. Loved that bell too!

Too bad that bell is mostly a thing of the past. It's still there, but rarely are the frat guys there to ring it. Only after goals at some of the bigger ECAC games.

I want the whistle. You want to rub it in and demoralize the opponent.. if every one in the dome doesn't play along I don't think the band and fight song is going to cover it

I liked the whistle too but when SU keeps scoring over and over again that fight song is going to be extremely annoying to the other team.

Someone hit the play button on "hallelujah". Finally someone is willing to LET THE BAND PLAY!

Like it or not, there is no denying that it IS part of college football.

This makes me more excited about tonight, like we're going to get a better overall experience.

I know someone that had an academic scholarship for music. I think part of the scholarship required her to play in the marching band.
