Is there a belief in the community or those on this board that feel we'll ever be really good again? I don't mean 7-8 win, I mean BCS bowl good.

I'm watching all of these games and the separation between them and the Cuse is just enormous. And it's everywhere. It's their offensive ability, the D, the adjustments made during the game and at half, the absolute emotion the players and coaches give off, the ability for the players to make the 2nd and 3rd guy miss, the accuracy of the qb, the hands of the receivers, the breakaway speed of the rb's, the hard hits, and perhaps the most obvious to me, is the speed of everyone.

If we can get some damn facilities, we can compete. Until then most top prospects will just glance over us.

We'll be good again. I don't know when, but no reason we can't be.

Just chalk this up to another year (about the 13th in a row) where it's really depressing to watch football on New Year's Day. I included 2001 as a bit depressing, because as surprisingly good as we were, the best team in the country still beat us by 59.

We blew out West Virginia, who's playing in a BCS bowl FWIW

I'm still not convinced that was us, and unfortunately I accidentally deleted that game from my DVR. Or Verizon did it. Or it never happened.

Consistently a BCS team good?... No... can we get there once or twice a decade i think so. No reason the program shouldn't be bowl eligible every year. Thats what i expect.

If Boise St, Stanford, and TCU can, we certainly can. Will we ever be Ohio St or Bama, probably not. But I certainly expect we can field a team that can play with most schools once every five years or so.

honestly next year the big east is wide open again...cinci has no qb( i understand they beat us without one), rutgers wont be touched by an angle and Sanu is prob gone. S Fla wil underwhlem again, and they arent really have a good tiem recruiting, Daniels could put it together, but I doubt it. Pitt with another coaching change will be dicey in Chryst first year, however he will be a good coach there. Uconn has no recruiting and if we lose to them again its an joke, their rb is only legit player. WVU will be the favorite, but their defense isnt getting any better. LVille under Strong seem to be building something and I am a little worrisome of them, but they arent a powerhouse.

This may just be me but everything looks faster, better, more intense when you're watching a football game on a major network as opposed to say all our games on SNY.

USC is a pretty fast team, and I know we lost by 3 scores but for a half they didnt overwhelm us. PLUS they have prob the best QB in the country IMO

Unfortunately this doesn't necessarily mean anything for us. It was wide open this year and we managed to screw it all up. There is no reason to think next year won't be more of the same.

I can't help but wonder how the program would have done undr Chip Kelly.
If Nike was founded and head quartered in New Mexico, we'd never hear from Oregon... with or without Kelly.

Me thinks we haven't hit rock bottom under DM yet. I think it's going to be a long frustrating year next year.

I do think it will get better when we go to the ACC. Attendance especially. Quite frankly people like different and with teams like Clemson, virgina, fsu, va tech, etc it will be a nice change than the same teams we are now used to playing. Hopefully by then we will have begun to turn things around and we can build on any of the newbie ACC feelings.

Really? No reason at all?

I see a lot of QBs extending plays with their feet. I think SU's OL performed pretty well this year allowing less than 30 sacks and paving the way for another 1000 yard rusher- 4th consecutive season.

Really? No reason at all?

The offense in general was supposed to be better this year. The offensive line was expected to be significantly better as well as the receiving unit. The only real uncertainty on offense prior to the season was the RB's and I thought collectively they did a decent job, aside from Bailey who I didn't think was as dynamic as I was expecting.

So as far as next season I have no optimism at all. I was optimistic this year that the offense would at least show a little bit of life and I was greatly disappointed. If the HC, who supposedly was the co-offensive coordinator for the Saints and previous O-Line player himself, can't improve the offense or a somewhat veteran group of linemen... then no, I have no reason at all to think we won't be disappointed.

We will never be a ten win program ever year for a decade type, but really, we never were. I think we can be an 8 win and solid ACC team competing for orange bowls if we upgrade facilities and get lucky with a few great QBs. You can call this optimistic, but imo, whats the point in being a fan if you don't believe your team will ever have success? GO ORANGE!

Syracuse will never be BCS good under Marrone, IMO 7-8 wins probably tops, which is fine. If you want to be BCS bowl good, Syracuse University and the boosters, fanbase, etc need to commit by spending a ton of money, coaches, facilities, everything. That will be the only way to bring in better talent as well, spend on facilities and spend on the coaches that can recruit.

People want to talk about playmakers but when I look at Wisconsin and Stanford outside of their great qb's, their playmakers are on their O Line, tremendous O Line play. Our biggest weakness

To be relevant, a team has to win the recruiting battles -- at least its share -- against its principal rivals. We can sum up our advantages (attractive campus; the Dome) vs some disadvantages (declining region; lack of corporate support; fanbase) -- recruiting has been and will be a challenge.

Bottom line, it would take one heck of a dynamic coach to out-recruit our rivals and create a real buzz for the program. Marrone is improving his classes step by step, and finally, this current class has a few skill players. He has yet to land a class that ranks with Pitt or BC (or even Rutgers); or our new rivals in the ACC. Until he does that, in back to back years, we aren't competing for any major bowls.

Is it possible? If Toledo, Temple and Ball State can play in bowl games, we ought to be doing that every other year. BCS game? Only when all the stars align.

You might be on to something. I just never could warm up to watching us play USF, Cinci, Louisville . . . . There definitely is more of a buzz when the traditional rivals come in.

If you only watched the Pinstripe Bowl last year, you would have come away thinking SU was very good too. You can't really watch bowl games and compare. Btw, there were some pretty putrid bowl games as well. They weren't all as good as the MSU/UGA, OSU/Stanford, Oregon/UW games. Did you catch any of the Pinstripe Bowl this year? Based on what I saw, Iowa St would have finished dead last in the BE - they looked that bad.

As much as I don't want to say it, what SU needs to get to first is the level BC was at for the previous 12 years. Discounting this past year, I checked: 12 years, average record: 8-4, 12 bowls. They just did it with solid, not stellar, recruiting classes, and a gameplan that worked. Most SU fans would sign up for that in a heartbeat. Get there before we start thinking BCS games.

Kev

We'll be relevant again. As to how good? What is good? I'll take 8-4 every year with the occasional 9-3, 10-2, 7-5. During the exciting McNabb years we never finished higher than 19th ranked so top 10 finishes will be rare.
