William Kyle named to Naismith DPOY Watch List

funny kuz someone during the ncst game thread was yapping about what a poor defender he was. after one of the highest apogee blocks we've seen in a while. huh. kinda crazy i actually had to defend him . some fans and their nonsense !

(no surprise to see maliq brown on the list as well )

Love it. Glad we’ve had players like him and Brown before to root for on the team.
Good for William Kyle. He's been a nice addition. And congrats to Maliq as well. He's great to watch play. He's a lunch pail guy.

Maliq has a good shot at a natty this year. Duke is one point away from being undefeated. They play #3 Michigan on 2/21. Could mean something as far as seeding possibilities, but you know Duke will play it's first two NCAAT games close to home in Greenville, SC. But will Duke be the one seed in the East or will Yukon.

I love watching Kyle dunk and his blocked shots are incredible but he has struggled against talented bigs that have more size than him like against NC State.

I hate to say this, and I love the excitement that Kyle brings to the table, but he is not a particularly great all around defender.

He is an elite shot blocker, but that is about it. He doesnt clog the middle and his d rebounding is probably about average for a big playing the 5 hole.

Nonetheless, it would be great for him and great for the program if he somehow won that award.

Often times he’s trying to guard two guys at once. Amazing how this goes unnoticed. Won’t name names, but it would help if a few guys picked it up on the defensive end with rotations to avoid leaving him on an island.

NC State, for example. Guy gets beat 1 V 1 so Kyle has to step up to protect the rim or stay home. NCSU did good film study knowing that he’ll commit to blocking the shot and had easy dishes underneath. Would help some if the beat guy tried to make a play on the ball.

Pick N roll game, he hedges on the guard and the rotations are just stinking. Was a lot better earlier in the season.

Maybe Shot blocker of the year, but Defensive player of the year is insane.Have they even watched entire games or just blocked shot highlight reels? Get a grip geeeez!

Not sure the point you’re trying to make here. Are you penalizing Kyle for his teammates not being able to, or trying to, defend their own guy?

Our perimeter players stink at D. They are getting beat from up high. The responsibility of the guy playing the 5 spot should include contesting the lane once it is apparent the Red Sea has parted. Kyle defends vertically if he is in position to do so. If he is there it is a shot block attempt. He never just gets his body in there to stand tall and/or take the charge as an elite all around defender should do. Has he even taken a single charge this season ? The guy is Mr. Excitement and Mr. Hustle. I love watching him play, but unfortunately he is a one dimensional defender IMHO. If we has a solid interior defender how is it that every opponent gets to the rim so easily ????

Giving up after getting beat is the criticism. Keep going and can possibly get a deflection or swipe from behind.

Who can? Swipes from behind are almost always a foul. How about we get guards who can actually defend, or are you so conditioned from JBs final years that you expect we have a center to try to do all of the work on defense?

I have a different opinion. An elite rim protector should make guys think twice before attacking the rim. NCSU did an excellent job attacking all around. VA Tech diced them up in the zone with the masterful back screens.

To imply guards and wing players are just dominating over him is silly.

Wonder how he compares with other 5s on pass deflections and steals.

I think we’re discussing the same thing in defense of criticism of Kyle LOL. No I don’t expect him to do all the work. Where did you get that from?

An elite rim protector is only of value if he’s in the lane all the time. And zone isn’t our primary defense anymore. When I get matched up with a shot blocker, I immediately get out beyond the three line and take him out of the equation. Every team does this. Probably why we see Kyle setting picks at the top of the key.
