is Syracuse denied the kid from Hobart the ability to come to our pro day for the scouts to see. so now they will do their own early in the morning hoping some will stop by before heading up to Cuse.

nice of SS and the boys...

whats position does the kid play? i could come up w a few reasons for this.

Not uncommon, I know of multiple D3 players struggling to find a venue.

Is there any downside to allowing a kid from a lower division school come to our pro day? Too me it seems like it does nothing but make us look good by working with a school like Hobart.

whats the reason behind the power play??

talent scouts are going to find talent, whether theyre at manley or not.

to deny someone from a small school the ability to come to your day doesnt make sense to me.

granted they dont want every tom, dick & harry from a 200mile radius at d2 & D3 schools coming...but this kid went to the senior bowl.

if anything, its probably a good idea to keep an eye on the coaches there...

Curious if it could be a liability risk IF he were to get hurt on our campus?

Some of the points listed below are valid, as well as like you said, you don't want every T, D & H there. If you say yes to one, how can you deny the next?

You don't want him showing up your prospects & to a small extent Liability is an issue.

I can't give you an answer specifically, but, I know it's becoming standard practice. UB has told a handful of kids to keep looking too.

There are a couple legitimate prospects at the smaller levels this year, and it's looking like they're going to have to go to the larger national showcases that you have to pay for entry.

Maybe? Couldn't that taken care of simply by having him sign some sort of waver?
You can sign a waiver, but, absolute/strict liability could make it void. If something does happen, all parties (Hobart & SU) could be sued for loss of future potential earnings.

It's a long shot, but, is it with it?

I'm not condoning, just trying to think why it's becoming standard protocol.

very few kids do a pro day at another school. look at last years results its very uncommon to do it.

In theory yes, but it practice is seems a lot of waviers aren't worth the paper they're written on in many lawsuits. I know we've had other small school kids at our pro days in the past, but perhaps the staff have been told no by the powers that be?

its really not absolute/strict liability. it more comes down to whether the waiver is enfoceable. typically, public policy prevents a party from being released from liability for its own negligence in such a waiver, although i don't know how ny courts would rule on the issue. however, i highly doubt the liability issue is a concern. syracuse has hundreds of athletes working out at its facility almost constantly. further, even if this was a concern, any attorney worth a dime could draft a contract requiring hobart to provide insurance coverage and contractual indemnity that would fully insulate the university.

True enough. I just don't think anything we've seen from SS pre-Syracuse or currently would reflect him not wanting a kid to have the best chance possible. I'm sure there's an easy answer and was thinking our law suit happy society might be it. I have no inside knowledge but presume the reasoning isn't something sinister or vindictive in nature.

as stated above, my $ is on fact we have a tackle who is trying to get drafted as high as possible.

Hickey is going to the NFL Combine. It's doubtful he'll do much at SU's Pro Day, unless he does poorly in Indy. So,protecting Hickey should be the last reason to deny a kid from coming to the Pro Day, so hopefully it's a case of liability and nothing else.

Never met a waiver that was worth anything. I tell my kids to not to worry about them .

Ali Marpet (the Hobart kid) is going to the NFL combine too. He was one of the top linemen coming out of the Reese's Senior Bowl a couple weeks back. He'll probably play guard or center at the next level, though. They were giving him a middle round projection.

If Hickey's draft status is influenced in any way by SU hosting an OT from Hobart for pro day, than Hickey was on shaky ground to begin with. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me; must be another reason. There is a lot of tape of Hickey playing against Beasely and Goldman - that's where he made, or didn't make, his grade.

That's not how crazy draft season goes. Bridgewater throws without gloves and drops like a rock. You need everything to go your way. One bad day and people forget all the game tape.

hes in competition w hickey for a draft spot. id probably tell him sorry as well. need to give your guys every advantage there is. if sean had an off day, could cost him draft positioning, or it could be exacerbated by the other player looking really good.

Ya, i'm totally fine with Shafer making that call. Dog eat dog world even if it's a small advantage to our guys, i'd take it.

Does anyone know for a fact that it was HCSS's call?

Didn't Jerry Fairchild at some point say that they were hitting a snag looking for a place that would let Trey attend for pro day? Can't really remember. But maybe, just maybe this was a call made by someone that HCSS can't argue with? Just a thought.

Does anybody know if the 'word on the NFL street' is accurate?

The thread's originator provides nothing but that vague phrase.

It may indeed be true, but everyone's reacting as if it were fact.

Anybody got any facts?
