WOW .. All-American player says "I am gay." This is huge ...

its controlling sports center and killing the su win coverage -

i dont see what the big deal is- i would take a gay dude that can play lights out over a straight guy who cant if i was serious about winning a title - its not like he walks around the locker room hunting for meat

So, I guess if he has a bad game and is criticized he now has the homophobic card to play? (Yes that is sarcasm for all the liberal/progressive Syracuse fans.)

Congrats to him. It will be very interesting how this story works out for him.

Wonder how many people in Morgantown think they have a shot at the SEC now because they think Mizzou would obviously have to be kicked out of the league.

Hope the Dude isn't on vacation. Although, where would he go.

This is going to sound horrible...

But the better player Sam becomes, the better it will be for gays in all sports, not just football. If he becomes a kick-ass player in the league, his teammates will accept him, and no longer will their be thoughts and voices saying "gay people can't make it in the NFL, they don't have the mentality".

I don't think it has to do with playing ability, I think it has to do with locker room. I think it will be an interesting question if there will be a move to have separate locker rooms. We separate men and women. Should no one be separate or should there be separation based upon sex and sexual orientation.

Seperate locker rooms? What?!

I can't really tell if you're actually advocating for that or not

I hate to talk the money angle, but there has to be a TON in endorsements as the first openly gay active NFL player, right?

From?

Sam seems like a bit of a tweener b/t LB and DE, and I've always been amazed how disposable players are in "the league." ESPN made him sound like a 3rd round pick, the SI story in the thread is far different.

Should be interesting.

Probably the kind of Godless, heathen companies that have the temerity to make an ad with people singing America the Beautiful in languages other than English. ;)

Can you imagine that being an acceptable mindset in any othe business. Oh, maybe in a couple of decades the trading floor/movie set/legislature/loading dock/supermarket will be ready for a gay employee... These people are all such cowards. Don't dopey football coaches love to yammer on and on about molding character and that BS? How about telling your team to and be tolerant.

this is not news at all. Bruno scooped the first gay college football player at Univ of Alabama 11 years ago

This story is up there with Manti Teo's fake girlfriend in that it will get some press coverage for a bit then just die away.

This really isn't big news in the year 2014. Lots of gay athletes.

Funny, I was taking to some people about this exact thing. Remember the whole "How will a locker room accept Teo?"

Seems like it worked out just fine.

Good for this kid. Just watched his interview on Sportscenter. I look forward to the day when what a person prefers behind closed doors doesn't matter to anyone. Until that time comes, I'll be rooting for this guy (unless he ends up in the NFC East without an NY on his lid ;) ). That took guts to do what he did.

There are a ton of companies that'd want to be the first to have him as a spokesman. It's groundbreaking. Culturally, we flock towards those who are like us. There are plenty of gay football fans, and really gay people in general, who haven't been specifically cornered in advertising. He can bridge those communities and cultures and [probably] make bank on it. Good for him in that.

That is a sad commentary.

"I don't think football is ready for [an openly gay player] just yet," said an NFL player personnel assistant. "In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's-man game."

Just plug in the word black and people were having this same exact conversation in 1960. The time for what is right is never "a decade or two from now." Give me a break.

Interesting that the SEC defensive player of the year is a mid round pick...that's surprising. As for him being gay, I couldn't care less...dudes a football player that played for Missouri and all I know is that somebody ought to tell him that Alec Lemon is still open in the end zone.

He says he came out to his team before this season, and many teammates knew for years. The NFL could learn a lot from this team. Sure, there will always be those with hairy knuckles, but the more stories like this, the less of an 'event' it becomes.
For the record, my father is incredibly tolerant and he has the hairiest knuckles I have ever seen.:)

Greg Jones, LB. michigan st. 3x b1g 1st team. 2x consensus all american. b1g defensive player of the year.

6th round pick in '11.

starting MLB SuperBowl.

cut next august.

out of league.

i think we can all agree that the b1g plays good football.

point, if this guy doesnt make it, lets hope all the crazies dont say its because hes gay. even decorated SEC guys sometimes cant play on Sundays...
