I'm not seeing much blocking from the WR's the last year +. I'm not sure if it's due to lack of size or effort there. Makes me wonder if we should have Benson on the perimeter more as a TE/WR flex who can block for the screens/outside runs and release when the Defense starts playing for it.
Who'd have thought I'd be dreaming for the days of Devin Butler-His hands were questionable, but he was a willing and able blocker.

Custice was a heck of s blocker to

Agree. I made this comment in another thread. They did throw the screen with no blockers expecting the wide receiver to beat his man. Also when n. Johnson was asked to block he was just thrown to the ground. We need Barron or Hendricks out there with some size. I know they like N. Johnson for his speed but I feel using bigger receivers for your primary receivers with Johnson coming in in four or five wr sets would open more things up.

Yup.

Especially having a QB who can get the bubble screen into the WRs hands quickly. Dungey took longer.

That said with our WRs you risk a fumble every time its called since they aren't great at catching.

If they don’t catch it it’s not a fumble...did you know that?

Good point and I have been yelling to keep benson on the outside ever since the first thought of him moving to "TE" when he was still 210#. From day 1 have loved the way this kid moves in space and thought he had the frame to add 10 or 15 and still maintain his speed and be a physical presence all over the field, even blocking, making him a pro prospect from day 1.

Yes, I think the blocking on the outside has been lacking mostly dt our lack of wr size and physicality. Just a few years back we had a stable of athletes all over the field and making contact down field at the 2nd and 3rd level springing plays. Back to benson, just hope the TE experiment is short lived, he could be special on the outside in space.

Benson was always a tight end.

Respectfully, says who? The TE has been nearly nonexistent in dinos offense.
Says the Cuse roster, the Cuse signing day roster, his signing day video and his high school recruiting profiles.
We get that you want him to be a wide receiver but he hasn’t played that at SU. The fact that the TE doesn’t get many passes doesn’t factor in.

Please show a reference where we had played him as a wide receiver because that is what you are claiming and I am disputing.

Uh if the pass is backwards it’s a fumble if it’s not caught. Bubble screens the QB will throw backwards if under center. Which we don’t line up in anymore.

We don't have any Terrell Owens sized receivers out there but a lot of blocking is about determination and technique. Wayne chrebet was a good blocker.

Lol, this argument is hot stuff. So, bc hs stories say he is a TE at 200-210#...with 4.5ish speed...he should be a te? Bc relative to his hs teammates, he is a TE!? I was 140 in hs playing wr, and any lineman over 190 played OL. this kid scored a TD his frosh year from the outside and it was a work of art. This kid is a player and PRO if he plays on the outside
The amount of resistance is astounding given our lack of talent, size, and physicality at WR. AT 6'3", 230 for the next 1-3 years he will be a twiner and so LOST wo an identity personally and athletically. Give me a friggin break...

Lol. It’s not resistance, it’s just stating the facts. You keep referring to him as a receiver and he is not and has not been. He plays tight end and has played tight end. Maybe he would be great at receiver, but that’s not where they play him.
You are confusing what you think he should be playing, where he actually plays and what everyone else may or may not think.

I am confused as to where he should play? Lol. That's entertaining. The funny thing is you keep going back to the fact he was a TE in HS . again, I was a wr at 130-140#. Many talents play in hs at skill positions 10-40# lighter than the college positions they ARE RECRUITED AT. sure, this kid might have been recruited as a TE. in the end its laughable as I love the kid and simply think he could give our wr stable a shot in the arm...a MUCH needed shot. His natural position and skill set.

Ok, fellas, here we go, benson is a TE when we are thin at wr and getting killed re wr blocking. Ok, benson is 6'3", 230. Where does that leave the kid? Well...in a space called GRAY...or...NO MANS LAND. no true position. Fast, but too small for TE. getting zero targets and just a disaster. Sorry LB..

. That’s not what I said, read it again.

Okay, at least you are finally acknowledging he was a tight end and they recruited him as a tight end.

I’m not dreaming for those days.

But Nykiems not a good blocker and Taj is a toothpick

Amen, great take, but there are plenty of fans on this board who still think we get it and have it when it comes to wr development. And, think I am nuts saying EB should have stayed at wr. For the love of God!?...WHY NOT!????? given our poor blocking and beat up WRS?

See, it doesn't matter what position you played in HS. And at 140lbs, you wouldn't have played at my HS. But, that's also not relevant. Benson played TE, was recruited at TE and has always been a TE at SU. So, it doesn't make sense for you to say he should "go back" to WR. Should he be moved to WR? Maybe, I don't know. But you're not focusing your debate on that, rather focusing on this notion that he was once a WR and was moved to TE.

It's not just that he played TE in high school. It's that his skillset/athletic ability are better suited for TE. It's more complex than just running a 4.5. He lacks the agility and hip mobility required to be a WR. At TE he's a mismatch that we need to utilize. At WR he's a big guy with good straight line speed that probably wouldn't get open versus a DB. That doesn't mean we can't put him out wide and get a LB or safety out of the box or use him to block on some of the screens.

Listen, look test and what we need in Our offense, benson is a wr. We dont use tight ends well historically. So, yes, the coaches know him better, but from what WE see, benson would prosper at wr and have a chance to dominate physically. Speed and size. That's all my arguement is. Through 3 games, he is non existent and come on guys, tight ends that make a difference are 6'4"+, and 250+. The poor guy is in a huge grey area trying to make him a college TE. his NATURAL position is wr where he could dominate at the D1 level.
