Wr Blocking

It's not just that he played TE in high school. It's that his skillset/athletic ability are better suited for TE. It's more complex than just running a 4.5. He lacks the agility and hip mobility required to be a WR. At TE he's a mismatch that we need to utilize. At WR he's a big guy with good straight line speed that probably wouldn't get open versus a DB. That doesn't mean we can't put him out wide and get a LB or safety out of the box or use him to block on some of the screens.

Good arguement and ty for the chat. This is good stuff. Just saying, 6'3, 230 isn't gonna get it done from the TE position. I thought he did have the speed at wr to play on the outside. Hope I am wrong and he can play on the inside. Given our wr trouble at the moment, just think he would be a problem for opposing defenses at 6'3, 220 on the outside where we need a presence and block like a madman on running plays.

As I said before when mentioning the 4.5 40, it's not simply about speed. There are other necessary physical attributes. At 230 lbs he can be an effective TE. He won't be a dominant blocker but he could be adequate. He'll likely keep getting bigger too. Probably not 260 big, but 245 when all is said and done would be fine.

If the staff wanted to prioritize a big WR for blocking, they could. Hendrix would be on the field more. We had a big WR on the roster last year too that could've been on the field more. It seems our big guys don't do other WR things well enough.

Who is that big tight end that killed us about 30 years ago?. Ted somebody? It might have been when we played Ped State... Anyway, I keep remembering him crossing across the middle, catching the ball in the middle, and him beating our db's down the opposite sideline for a TD. Think he caught 11 passes that day!. Wish ny memory was better.

Listen, look test and what we need in Our offense, benson is a wr. We dont use tight ends well historically. So, yes, the coaches know him better, but from what WE see, benson would prosper at wr and have a chance to dominate physically. Speed and size. That's all my arguement is. Through 3 games, he is non existent and come on guys, tight ends that make a difference are 6'4"+, and 250+. The poor guy is in a huge grey area trying to make him a college TE. his NATURAL position is wr where he could dominate at the D1 level.
I have a new title for Benson. Its not WR or TE. Its WE.
Stands for Wasted End. It ridiculous Dino and Gilbert dont have this kid involved. Wouldn't be surprised to see him pack up and portal his way to another program. Kids a weapon that needs to be utilized.

I don't remember. I'm probably repressing the memory.

Where your point blows up is benson can run, catch, and block not just looking for another bog body, but an all around wr making the offense better.

The TE who killed us most recently was Kelcey (sp?) at Cinncinati when we were still in the BE. We just couldn't stop him.

Sounds like a good tight end according to our look test, especially with a bog body. Is that like a swamp thing? Bogs will slow down the opposing defense when he is blocking, but also may make him slower as a wide receiver as bogs are wet and spongy.

I'm not seeing much blocking from the WR's the last year +. I'm not sure if it's due to lack of size or effort there. Makes me wonder if we should have Benson on the perimeter more as a TE/WR flex who can block for the screens/outside runs and release when the Defense starts playing for it.
Who'd have thought I'd be dreaming for the days of Devin Butler-His hands were questionable, but he was a willing and able blocker.
Hendrix made a good block at the end of the last game. Too bad the guy was already down and he got a penalty...
I didn’t realize Hendrix was that big, I would definitely like to see him on the field more with his size and especially if he does have a little mean streak

Are you ignoring what I have said before or just illiterate? I'll repeat it. Just because he runs fast in a straight line does not mean he has the agility to run routes like a WR.

He doesn't have to be moved to WR to be used in the offense. I don't know why you are so hellbent on having a guy switch to a position he has never played. Look beyond the height, weight, and 40 time. If he had the correct skillset/athletic ability to play WR at his height and weight, he would've been a 5 star guy playing for Clemson.

Lol, funny play on my typo and appropriate. I would have jumped all over it too:);) ok, with correct spelling, LB is built to play wr naturally and as a wr had the speed, size, and mindset to block as a young player. He had it all as a wr. We are struggling to field 4 competent wrs as of this past week.

The arguement that LB is a wr and would be starting this week is energetic and full of juice. Sure , try and defend his move into the abyss. There is a limited argument. Thing is, he doesn't have a "BOG" body or any traits that will "BOG" him down. Unless, that is, if he adds too many lbs chasing that TE dream...of the coaches:)

Everyone seems to want to transfer in his opinion.

Unfortunately, the NCAA has allowed it to turn into unrestricted free agency (except for us, of course, someone has to balance). So people are going to jump even quicker on the [insert player name who didn't have a big stat game] is going to transfer.

Right. Use it or lose it.
