I don’t recall the timing but the opt out did grant relief on eligibility. This was prior to the NCAA providing relief across the board. Looks like the opt out was used as an easy transfer tool early on.

Most of the players who opted out were given the option to remain on scholarship. Dawson, Howard and Adams took the option and remained on scholarship .

And players can't transfer, or have contact with other schools until they are released from their scholarship.

understood but by not playing and being granted the waiver they would be immediately eligible to transfer for the Spring semester. Had they played they would not be prior to the updated eligibility changes mad just prior to or in season.
