Class of 2020 WR Chris Long (NJ) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (12/17/24)

WRs can get hurt. A lot. Especially in a pass oriented offense like ours.

Consider our plight at WR at the end of the season.

We had Zeed still out.

Pena was banged up and playing anyway (ribs).

JRS was still playing with a bad hamstring,

Hatcher was out. Appeared to have suffered a major leg injury. Believe he did it playing special teams. Did we ever hear what his status is now?

Gill was our only WR in our regular rotation who was fully healthy. Almost had to use true frosh (Hornsby and Ross), who I assume were mostly playing scout team this year, just to have extra bodies to give guys a rest.

With the scholarship limit expanding to 105, adding an extra WR is a good idea. It would be much better to have an experienced guy who is good in the locker room and totally buys into DART available than having to bring in kids who don't really understand the playbook and what it takes to be a P4 level WR yet.

If Long was on the roster this season, he would have played in the UM game for sure. Probably a bunch of others as well.

There are 20 more scholarships in play. It is smart to address depth across the board with this to try and ensure we can field a solid team in November.
Yea I have no problem using a scholarships to go after experienced WR’s. We should. I just wasn’t a fan of someone in year 5 who hasn’t been productive. With all the WR’s in the portal I thought we could be a little more selective. Not getting worked up about it. hopefully that means Ross and Hornsby are ready to contribute next season.

Not sure why the waste of scholarship here?
Special Teams - has some minor KR experience and probably can be a gunner or other coverage guy
Situational deep threat
Perhaps he's a good blocker?
NJ kid
Depth
Maybe we have some departees that haven't been announced

Maybe bring him in to help reel in the really big Rutgers' fish, of which there are none

Agreed, he's also here 1 year, either way it's not a huge deal. If he comes in and contributes that is great. If he doesn't he's gone at the end of the year. To me, 5th year guys are fine. Big difference between an 18 year old kid versus 22-23.

We have quite a few unheralded WR's come in over the years and make a difference and if he doesn't well nobody will ever remember him. There's room for depth and some error here
Sometimes there are other agendas beyond bringing in starters

He was a Fran recruit at Temple and a Fran recruit at Rutgers. Guessing that's a factor.

How many reclamation projects at WR do we need to succeed with before people realize past performance doesn't always equate to future output? AET, Tristan, Pena, Meeks... I'm sure there's more.

Meanwhile we were all hype for 4 star Florida transfer CDRW with similar offer list to Long and how'd that go for us?

People lose sight of this. Relationships play an important role in taking certain guys and there’s often more than playing time for certain guys.

You’re correct. Guys get banged up and you need depth. We survived this year because we had a little bit.

As some people have indicated maybe this is a situation where if the player does well Fran can use it to recruit Jersey. Compare his production at Rutgers versus coming in playing under Fran. If he does well it’s a positive and if not he is only here for one year.

Agreed. Experienced upper classman. Probably just a two-deep guy, in a talented WR room with several returning / proven commodities.

Nothing wrong with that. And if he's better [even just slightly] than that? Disco.

The hype around CDRW was totally out of control and unwarranted.

Fran and staff know what they have and how many WR's so I'm good with whatever they want. Also, he's a little different than what's on the roster speed wise.
