Class of 2023 WR Johntay Cook (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (5/1/25)

Very rarely do slot receivers get jammed. Most dbs play off the receiver with inside shade to take away the slant. It’s hard to jam a quick receiver on a slant route.
And that is why if Johntay Cook is out there playing it’s more then just yardage, it changes what you can and can’t do in the offense. The added challenge for defenses. If you play Cook soft in the middle of the field, he may just need to break one tackle to take it the distance. But if you play Cook tight. It opens the receivers on the outside which may easily create space with the attention to the middle of the field. QB hopefully reads the coverage on Cook well.

I would also like to see more jet sweeps like we used with Pena on the play to win the Miami game. Nixon does a great job, but I feel like that was under utilized last year and Cook could be a weapon there.

Over use vs element of surprise. The OC dilemma.

i love jet sweeps because they're basically just a running play

Cook on one side and James on the other, have both come back and QB gets to decide where to pitch reading the defense.
Would really mess up the defensive guys. Probably a penalty 2 guys in motion, so wouldn't work.

Isn't Scott Schwedes like 90 years old?

Not sure if this has been posted already but here’s a podcast with Johntay from right after he committed to us. Doesn’t go into great depth but gives you a better idea of what happened the past couple years from his perspective. Seems like a good kid who got things thrown at him that he wasn’t ready to handle mentally and lost himself as a result. Credits Fran for why he choose Cuse and his belief in him as not just a player but a person (fast forward to 27 minute mark for Syracuse discussion).
