Class of 2026 WR Messiah Hampton (NY) Verbal to Oregon

I'm very very curious to see what happens with the new House settlement framework. What does it mean to be "top 20" in NIL? The deals are going to be audited, and it's not like you can just have a huge pot of money sitting around and throw it at the players. I expect that business arrangements (sponsorships) are going to be much more important, and that makes me wonder what the difference between schools' affiliated offerings will really be.
Money will be paid under the table like it’s been for years and no auditor is going to uncover the fraudulent payments. The cheaters will always cheat.

Too bad.

Hopefully we can land that kid out of Florida.

AND get this kid on the rebound, when he inevitably portals out of Oregon.

Also, FFFFFFFF Dan Lanning.
I hope it works out for him at Oregon. Always leave the door open for him if he needs a reset. I want to believe Ross Douglas specifically does right by him there because I know we would’ve here. And I want to believe that Ross Douglas continued to pursue Messiah for the right reasons and not because he needed to bring in a big time recruit to gain respect at his new stop. Remember when Fran Brown hosted KJ Bolden at Syracuse for a visit, but it ended up having to do more with selling him Georgia over FSU.

We are one step behind in a lot of faucets. NIL is better than it was previous years, still no where near let’s say top 20? Our nil programs for a while couldn’t get along and work together on certain things (that’s been mostly patched). Our much needed new facility is great but we were a few years behind when we should of had that. That’s just few things, athletic department as a whole needs to get out more for fundraising for NIL. These next 3-5 years are crucial if we want to be a power conference team in 2030.
I want us to be #1. But it really isn't a fair criticism to say we aren't top 20. Obviously, most schools aren't. That our collectives weren't united but are now, that was then, this is now. And we have the facility now. We can't do anything about what we did or didn't do in the past. I'm all for keeping our AD honest, but these don't seem like fair complaints to me at all.

It hurts to lose a kid from NY but stuff like this will happen. He followed a coach that he has a great relationship with, he is going to a top tier program with a great head coach, and Eugene is a terrific college town.

My son taught there for seven years and I have spent a ton of time there. I loved the place. Yeah, it is rainy in the winter…kind of like three months of Syracuse November… but the kid is from Rochester, right?

As we are no longer going head to head with MAC schools for recruits like we did in the not so distant past, we are going to come in second occasionally to real programs. It is a tribute to us that we are running with the big boys and may well have prevailed if Douglas had stayed. Fran will have other aces up his sleeve.

I could easily be more judgmental since losing out on Hampton today. I also realize wildhack has a tougher job as private school AD with less funding, to me I just think there can be a bigger push for NIL with football and think Fran is the main reason it’s improved a lot not the athletic department.

Thats not true. He needs way more support from JW
I know every time he is asked he has not complained about the universities support. Would like more business support but JW cannot force a company to donnate.

Based on the syr.com article a couple things specifically hurt. 1. We get the 1 local kid who actually thinks it’s a benefit going away to school. 2. Syracuse staff is considered an extended family. Basically means we did everything possible and still couldn’t get a local kid. Stuff like this may be a factor in a few years when Fran starts getting other offers. Ultimately, he’s going to want to win..big. Not being able to win battles like this for one reason or another will eventually add up. Imagine how he feels after pouring everything he could into this. I don’t care what he says, as a competitor this has to kill.

I still think going to a college for a position coach is a terrible decision and bad guidance, but it’s not my life.

I think the other big mistake ... transferring to a school who is quarterbacked by a kid that thus far in his career has completed just a shade over 50% of his passes. I am not impressed with Dante Moore, maybe he unlocks something this year but he will see far better defenses in the B1G than the PAC-12 and his numbers weren't all world.

This recruitment will go until Signing Day. Its not over!
My only feeling on his going to Oregon is you should never make your decision based on how you feel about your position coach.
They are vagabonds, here today and gone tomorrow.
Head coaches are a bit different, usually they stay a few years.
Wish him well, on to the next player, hope he has a nice career, but for NYS kids once they leave prefer not to bring them back.

And yet, players do it all the time. That’s why coaches put a premium on hiring position coaches who are also great recruiters.

Unlike many, I didn’t get the impression that his decision was based solely upon the relationship with the position coach. I viewed it as more of a “all other things being equal” sort of thing. He liked both schools and both head coaches about the same and the guy who he developed the close relationship with tilted the scales.

If things don’t work out in Eugene and the coaches want him, I’d have no problem taking him back. We have done it before. Heck, Duce Chestnut was here, left, and came back. I did find it weird that he publicly brought up the possibility of portalling to SU in the future on the day he was announcing going to another school. Odd thing to do. Seems like that’s the sort of thing you’d tell the Fran privately when you called to inform him of your decision and thanked him for recruiting you.

Well, if his position coach leaves, he can portal back home.

Yeah, that was Fran, a stud recruiter as a position coach. At the same time, he's proof of why you don't commit primarily based on the position coach. There was only one spot where he stayed 4 years.
