WR

Some people on this board have been pretty critical over the years about guys who were simply possession receivers, without the speed to be game breakers. But we could really use a couple of those guys right now.

DL and WR are the units that are the most disappointing. They don't have the injuries to point to. They don't have the youth to point to. They're just not performing at the level they need to.

Too many drops but some of the problem is that the routes they are running are crap. Way too many deep vertical routes. Low percentage plays. Need to throw majority of passes in the 5 to 15 yard range. All these going for broke long passes are the expressway to 3 and outs and tiring out your own D. this is not rocket science. I don't understand how the coaching staff can't see this.

I would love a team of Alec Lemons. Ran about a 4.6 at the combine but he was a great route runner and caught just about everything.

Tommys last drive they switched to zone making them easy to pick apart .
What's the name of tommys HS o lineman who transfered from rutgers, if we had got him or even just another transfer on the line that could've made a big difference IMO, along with a bunch of transfer WR's. i went through courtney jacksons transfer list and I'm amazed at some of the offers he had, tommy made a nice play to avoid the free rusher great throw should've been a TD, kim mccloud must've been really bad... atleast hes gone if were looking for a silver lining.

Whats the deal with ed hendrix, I'm sure its been said a thousand times but why isnt he playing

What is really surprising to me is the lack of athleticism that unit has. They can’t get separation, can’t get 50/50 balls, often times don’t know where the ball is and it actually hits them before they see it. For the amount of wideouts that are on this team, if the four or five that we have seen are the best, I guess wow is the only response I have. For all the wideouts that have been brought in, between them and the offensive line, not sure who has more misses. Something needs to change.

Knee injuries took their toll on him would be my guess.

Development of the WR position has been the biggest issue on the team, think there is an influx of talent in last year's class (Alford and Pena were the 2 I really liked) and then Hatcher is right there with the better recruits in the conference this year and is under-rated IMO.

Whatever attributes the staff was targeting in recruiting at that position, they either missed or they aren't developing them as well as they hoped (and I think this can be said about the OL as well).

Same thing each year imo. Custis wasn’t given a real chance to contribute until his senior year, Cam Jordan hardly given a chance last year, Ed not given a chance this year. So help me lord if I see an impressive highlight from RTB in practice.

What we have is not getting it done, so I do not see validity in saying that the backups aren’t ready. Another reason why I think our scheme isn’t working.

I've never really been critical about that, although you're right, several others have. What bothers me more is we have a lack of WRs who know how to adjust to a throw in the air. They don't seem to know to come back for a ball or, in the case of an underthrown deep ball to stop, make a slight move to get between the defender and the ball and then go UP and make a play as opposed to staying down and trying to catch it in stride. AET and Ish were very good at doing this.
They also don't seem to improvise when the play breaks down. I've seen them run their short routes and the just stand there while TD runs OB. Make a damn move and find a spot. It's WR 101.

It's almost like they've never run scramble drills.

The most disappointing unit on the team outside of the line. You need more Trishton Jackson's on this team. Isn't the fastest guy, but has skill that you can't teach; hands, tracking the ball and breaking a route to help the QB. There are a lot of holes to fill this off-season. If Babers wants to cool his seat in 2021, he makes getting a transfer receiver a priority.

AET, Ishmael and Custis are among guys who had a cup of coffee in the pros. Jackson is on the 53 man roster. There's a theme.

There's underclassmen that have size, goal should be to get them ready ASAP to contribute.

Alford 6'5
Hendrix 6'3
Jones 6'4
Barron 6'4

Taj and Queely are 6'2 that's ok

Next year's WR recruits have size too

Gadsden 6'4
Hatcher 6'3
Long 6'3

I mentioned this a year ago but I'd also like to see us hire a WR coach from the state of Florida. Lustig took over the outside WRs in 2018 from Kim McCloud. I've been underwhelmed by the groups performance since then.

which is a little odd because I thought lustig does a really good job coaching specials. So you would think his coaching would have translated over to receiver too

Custis was listed as a starter his junior year before he got hurt during the preseason. As a sophomore he wasn't starting over Ismail or AET.

In good old days, there were two wide-outs and one was considered the "possession" guy and one the deep threat. Raymond berry and Jimmy Orr. Chris Burford and Otis Taylor. With an extra wide-out, one of them should be that type of guy. And what about the tight ends?
