WVU let's discuss

A ton of negativity in this thread. W. Va is obviously going to press the whole game. I think they will get scorched doing that. Kadary and Marek will bring the ball. Whoever McBride covers, the other one will beat their man and it will lead to open shots all over the court. It will help Buddy, Joe, Griff, Bobby and even Quincy. Game, set and match. Its a fantastic match-up for us. Looking forward to kicking Rutgers ass. Let's get out of this negative mind set. This team lost 9 times and will soon lose #10. LGO.

WVU gives up a lot of points given they like to play fast. They don't want a game in the 50s. For that matter we don't either.

Two things are key vs WVU. The first is take care of the ball and make them pay for being aggressive. Open shots will be there. The second is keep them off the foul line. They want to force the issue and get to the line. They average 23 FTAs a game and make them at a 72 pct clip. It all comes from turning the game into chaos when they can. This means transition D will be key- gotta slow down their relentless efforts to attack the rim and get runouts.

If they press the entire game Buddy and everyone else should get a lot of good open looks. I hope that’s what they do!

We can only win tomorrow if we rebound. Jesse needs to do what he’s been doing when he gets out there.

And I think he’s going to get a good amount of burn now that he’s shown JB he’s tourney ready

This WV team IMO is the best team we have faced all year. I’ve seen them play several times this year and I don’t see a weakness of theirs that we can necessarily expose. We won’t win this game with our D, it’ll come down to our offensive execution and efficiency. And, whether we match their intensity, grit and will.

Huggins is quite familiar with the Syracuse zone, and he’ll have his players well prepared. Additionally, WV sees zone in their conference...Baylor plays a very solid one. The Mountaineers lost some tough games in arguably the top conference this year...where a bounce here or there would’ve rendered a different outcome.

If we bring our A game, I think it’ll be tight and a chance to get the W. Anything else, we will lose...and likely by double digits.
Can someone explain to me why we're not just facing Virginia (III) again?

Another highly-regarded defensively-minded opponent that likes to apply lots of man-to-man pressure on the ball, one that has a lot of shooters who are confident they can break a zone (just like Virginia II-SDU); it seems to be the continuing theme we're running into.

The one twist: this west 'Virginia team' we now face likes to apply full court pressure, which should work to our advantage, based on recent history, as others have noted.

My impression is that this Boeheim squad has been learning how to play "Virginia" all season, starting off terribly, but now demonstrating that they've received the instruction they needed to learn how to beat such teams.

I expect to see that learning curve continue its positive trajectory tomorrow, delivering us another major victory against a highly regarded favorite.:p

Comes down to refs. They let WVU slap and hold then SU loses

Said this in another thread, Texas averaged almost 80 ppg against WVU. They just scored 52 on Abilene Christian. Not saying it’s indicative of what will happen tomorrow, but I’m expecting a lot of offense from us. Hopefully the zone creates some scoring lulls and we can take advantage.

Luckily, the refs usually tighten up in the tourney. That's why teams like Pitt during the Dixon years fold. If they want to press us early, and often then I'm all for it. Could be a game made for Joe. Would love to see him live at the line, along with hitting threes after we break the press. JG, or AG need to step up from deep. Then throw in QG, and/or Marek down low, and we can handle them focusing on Buddy Bird.

The Big12 hasn't looked all that strong in the tourney even though they have gotten very favorable seedings and matchups. Boeheim really jumped on Griff the other night. I think he did that to try to get him to fully engage, because if he does, this Orange team will be very hard to stop. He sees Griffs real potential, and it's off the charts with his shooting and athleticism. If Griff comes with his A game, look out. He also lit into Girard, with the same idea. If Buddy, Griff and Girard are shooting at a level their capable of, who can stop the Cuse?

One thing that's going to be important is not giving WVU easy baskets. We can't be turning the ball over a lot in the face of pressure and letting them get runouts for easy points, and guys need to hustle back to stop the ball off of turnovers/misses and make WVU work against the zone in the half court. If we do that, I think we're favorites and have a chance to cruise.

If we don't do that, we might need 30 from Buddy again.

Or put more simply: if we play their style, they're favored. If we make them play our style, we're favored.
