last year through 5 games, we had 5.72 yards per play. That's when we made the switch to Lester.

This year, 5.46 yards per play.

after reading all those august articles about how much better everything is and how much more suited the offense is to the players, this is puzzling.

Did you remove the quarters where we went to a different QB due to injury and /or started a 5th string QB vs a top 10 team? I mean if you remove all context (like you did) it's still not that disconcerting - because we've watched the games - and with Dungey, this number will continue to be in the rear view.

Do you think otherwise?

i think dungey played fine on saturday and the offense was pretty bad which makes me question the offense.

next year's OC will have dungey too

Dungey led offense: 6.28yds per play
Would put us at 30th, nationally

Is it clear that Mahoney's quarters would drag the average down? Mahoney had a good second half against LSU; Dungey had a slow start against USF.

Bottom line, we need more from the running attack, and not just Dungey.

Offense started bad. 1st Q on the road, 1st road start for Dungey - missed reads. Overall returns on the offense with Dungey, should be more encouraging than the LSU game with a 5th stringer.

Lowest per play avg, 4.01.

Also of note - the defenses we've played so far are all above average.

Wake - 15
CMU - 39
LSU - 14
USF - 44

Good news?

UVa - 100

Bad news?

Pitt - 7

OK, and Mahoney's opponent was a top 10 LSU, and the team's play in that game was encouraging. And, for what it is worth, Mahoney worked his way up to 3rd string to earn the start. 5th string might apply to where he was in Spring?
We should be encouraged by Dungey, Frederick, Phillips and the chances the kids get better week to week.

I'm not saying it wasn't encouraging. It might be the biggest strike against Milly's anti-Lester bent. And I don't want to take anything away from his performance.

But I took it as "this system is good" what happens when we plug this very good QB into it.

That depends on what metric you use. Using S&P the Ds we have faced are:

Wake 46th
CMU 76th
LSU 40th
USF 69th

Which would be two decent Ds and 2 mediocre Ds. UVA is 90th and Pitt 19th.

Fair enough. Still good news this week.

you're very careful about our injuries but look at who virginia has played. some very good offenses.
They've played Boise, UCLA and ND. Wonder what our D would be ranked playing them? I shudder.

Yep. That's fair game. But I don't think we'd put them in the Pitt/Clemson/BC tier of D's we'll face. I don't think they are better than USF on D or O (who've played a pretty good slate of games so far too).

And I think you have to be more careful with injuries when you're talking about the QB position - they have the ball so much and can do so much harm to a teams numbers (and w/l)

lester as OC

12 games

302 ypg (would've been 122nd in 2014)
4.75 ypg (would've been 118th)

Last year get's thrown out for obvious reasons. Easier to stay with systems.

100th in rushing YPG against FBS teams this year. for a supposed power running team, it shouldn't fall apart with backup qbs

Coming off a bye week Lester has been awful. I still don't get what he was trying to do vs Pitt last year. I think Lester will be fine long term but it is a little concerning that the O has looked poor until he has been forced to open it up. We shouldn't have to wait until the last minute of the 3rd Q vs Wake or the 2nd half vs USF to see the O move the ball.

11 games vs FBS, 117 rushing YPG (would've been 112th last year)

100th this year, 84th last year.

we ran the ball better with mcdonald. we throw better with lester. we should get someone who can do everything better than mcdonald.

Could it be that statistics can be misleading?

Agreed.

I think you're making too little of how passing and running affect each other. Easier to scheme against a team who does one thing way better than the other. Playing a QB who can't pass means running is harder.

But on the whole - I agree. Would like to see us be more effective running.

We've played 4 games vs FBS in 2015. Last years numbers post demotion have an asterisk so huge you should toss them out.

Stats without context = a pile of numbers
