Yesterday's snowfall...

The weather yesterday wasn’t horrible but I think many in CNY are still in a bit of shock and not used to this type of weather. I honestly hoped those bad winters were finally behind us. Maybe this is just a blip and we’ll return to those Virginia winters next year.

I wonder if there are any others old enough to remember the Blizzard of 1966? I swear that was the largest snow event of my lifetime.
The best part about the blizzard of 66 for me was being in Harrogate, England, the 13th ASA Army field Station and reading about it in the Stars and Stripes . My Parents sent photos, and newspaper clippings.

I was only four at the time and don't remember it, but my family always talked about that as the biggest snow ever... three days of constant snow

Was nine. Lived in Phoenix. Two storied house. Can remember jumping off the roof. Two weeks off school. Had to cross country ski across the bridge to get to town.

I was in Syracuse for the '93 blizzard. My fraternity hosted a district convention that fell on the last weekend of spring break. We all got snowed in when the Governor shut down the NYS Thruway.

Best part was we convinced Chuck's to open and hauled a couple hundred people there to drink away the storm. I remember doing a funnel out of a trombone, but not much beyond that.
Trombone funnel I need to see the schematics of that.

Trombone comes apart in a few pieces. Remove the bell from the slide, turn upside down… funnel.

No doubt there was a lot of snow, but in my mind it was not even in the top 5 storms we’ve had in CNY over the years. There were two worse in 2002-2003 a week apart, 93 obviously, another in 06 or 07 when SU cancelled classes for the second time ever and just this past February.

That said I fully acknowledge those storms may have had snow fall over the course of two days, but I rarely agree with the airport totals. They always seem lower/higher than I expect. It must be the specific location the airport is in or the person taking the measurement needs help.
Funny story regarding the 1993 storm. I had shoveled the car out and wanted to go to Wegmans. I called to ask when they were going to close.
Their answer was “Christmas”

The 1993 storm was horrible. It was on a Saturday and my husband was very sick in bed with bad case of bronchitis, fever and all. I didn’t realize it but our basement window had opened with the force of the wind and snow. I went down to get laundry from the dryer and saw water pouring from a pipe in the basement. It was freezing and snowing through the open window down there. I called the local Ace hardware to ask what I could do to stop it and they said they’d help me if I hurried because they were closing. The car was buried and I was forced to walk about a mile in that blizzard. The owner was in his car ready to leave. He thankfully reopened the store and gave me a temporary type sleeve thing to try to stop the water and all sorts of heavy tape etc.My eldest son who was home from college had walked with me and helped me. I turned off the water and put the sleeve type thing on the pipe. It held till we could get someone to fix it on Monday. What a mess cleaning up the basement floor and shoveling around the window outside so I was able to get it closed and put duct tape inside to make sure it kept closed. Thank heavens for Ace hardware. Not a good day.

That lasted over 4 days of incessant snow.(I was a kid and was happy - no school for days).
My favorite storm was the ice storm of 1976 (Think that is the year). We lived in the outer Comstock area and would go sledding on the hill at the cemetery on Jamesville.

Normally we used those red plastic toboggans to go down the hill but, when we discovered that the cemetery road had iced over, we all brought our sleds with the metal rudders and did bobsled races down the road (which was both downward sloping and curved).

Best.Day.Sledding.Ever.

I remember the 1966 blizzard and the days following. None of my children believed me when I told them that the snow was piled so high that you could walk off the snow mounds piled on the side of the road right on to the top step of the school bus taking us to school (St Matthews).

I was at Harrogate much later than you. Beautiful area/countryside except one of the two years I was there it rained hard most of the year.

Yes it really is beautiful there, and the people are much different there then other parts of England. That's as close as I ever got to being married. Was engaged to a wonderful young women for 2 years and got transferred to Germany when they decided to turn it over to civilians.
Distance doesn't make the heart grow fonder, makes it worse.
Never meant anyone like that again, so I stayed single.
But it always felt like home. And at Christmas all the lights are so special.
