OT: Dave Portnoy is the worst, example #8 million

Maybe I have the wrong gambling outlet (don't gamble, hate all of it) but didn't McAfee do a turn at Barstool? If I'm wrong my bad...
No idea honestly. I’m not up on barstool or the personalities besides knowing the main guys from back in the day.

Portnoy is scum and no legit institution should partner with his company on anything as long as he's part of it.

I'm not a fan of gambling infiltrating every studio show and broadcast for a number of reasons, but it's the new reality. However, there's a difference between a bunch of talking heads promoting specials and making betting picks on the air, and literally screaming at players to foul from the scorer's table (especially in a game that has been decided like the one in the clip).

Gambling is my favorite thing to do. Given that it is a relatively efficient market being dictated by tens of millions dollars it can also provide a solid baseline for expectations on a game or for a team. Incorporating it into a pregame show or mentioning it on a broadcast can give useful context if it is done in the right way.

This is obnoxious and over the top. So is the constant barrage of gambling ads every time I watch a game on TV. American books are predatory and beyond unfair to their customers. It is a little gross that their advertisement practices are not being regulated more than they currently are, if they are at all.

Portnoy is Portnoy. I used to really like Big Cat but the "cant lose parlay" bs and the way he promotes gambling is a way to get stupid people to hemorrhage money into their chitty . There are some good apples and talented people at Barstool (PFT, Caleb) but I am very glad my stoolie phase was over with before I finished undergrad.

It is also very funny that these schools agree and are allowed to play in the Barstool Invitational, knowing full well what they signed up for, but there are athletes getting suspended for betting $5 on games that have nothing to do with their team. Money talks, I suppose.

To be fair, the spread is an easy benchmark for whether you had a good game. I don’t think anyone is betting on the Syracuse / Canisius game.
But they are on FAU vs Loyola? Someone would even bet on who “Big Cat” was betting on in that game. Gamblers gamble.

I enjoy occasionally going to the local casino, mostly because watching guys lose their minds screaming for something stupid (like a team down 16 in the final minute to foul because they need it to keep their ten-team parlay alive) amuses me greatly. It probably doesn’t speak well of me that I enjoy the misery of stupid people as much as I do - but here we are.

I got started gambling on a couple of the sites a couple years ago as they offered free money to start when it went legal in Ohio. I'm like why not? Free money. But also I know i'm too cheap to lose money so not a big deal for me to try it. If I was losing any money doing it I would certainly stop. I enjoy betting small on a handful of games here and there. I use their small weekly promotional boosts and what not to get a bit of an edge. I've doubled my starting money they gave me. At some point i'll probably pull out some profit and just play with my seed money again.

I dislike gambling and what I think it does to society in general but it can be fun. If the gambling sights make money that means users in general are obviously losing money which is not good for society in any way. Sure for some its just taking disposable money away from them but its also seriously hurting other addicts.

If I was losing any money i'd stop in a heartbeat. But I feel like i'm doing my part taking money away from them. I'm doing a good deed for society really. I just like to do my part to help out.

Uh, yeah. They’re on every game. Like I said, the benefit of those spreads is that you know what kind of game it’s going to be. It was a large spread, it implies that FAU is going to trounce Loyola.

Edit: I realize that I didn’t understand the purpose of your post. FAU is a top 25 team, right? I bet people would bet on it. Who cares?

It's certainly why I'm here.

I started with daily fantasy and I used to dabble in online poker. But that's exactly what the sharps figured out. There are hundreds of thousands probably millions, of people who gamble but don't treat it like a job and don't know exactly what they're doing or losing more than they win (ah, it's ok, I don't gamble much a few hundred here and there, or less than $50, or I only play $5 and $10 dollar games).

This combined with the ubiquity and ease to gamble online gives the sharps a huge pile of money that they can get their paws on. And not too long after they identified those huge piles of money there were scandals: God mode on poker sites and insiders getting daily roster percentages before lockouts. The average person playing for fun doesn't feel like they're being scammed, but they 100% were risking being scammed, if not scammed outright. Losing $25 a weekend on daily games isn't a huge deal, but a handful of guys cleaning up millions of those individual $25 bets certainly made out like bandits.

Once the daily fantasy scandals came out, I quit and have never given them a dime since. It's not nearly regulated enough and it's waaaay too reliant on getting legions of average dudes to pony up a couple of $20s every other week - hence the non-stop wall-to-wall advertisements and free plays ... what have you got to lose?

I’m fairness, this is the barstool invitational on barstool tv. Be mad at the schools for putting their players in that situation.

This.

He did go Gmac props crazy last year and pimped his threads that he bought at shirt world... before throwing an average pizza rating at Varsity...

I don’t see gambling as a sin, so this doesn’t bother me other than it being annoying that Big Cat was repeating himself so much and so loudly.

The game was over, so rooting for the spread or o/u was really the only thing left.

I don’t think the players heard/cared what Big Cat was saying.

For those who don’t know, the play-by-play guy is Jake Marsh, a Syracuse grad.

I absolutely hate all the gambling talk, even on this site. Talking about not beating the spread in each half of the canisius game is a recent example.
The anger is misdirected.
