Referencing lines is a legitimate means of assessing expected vs actual performance. I’m much more perturbed by billionaires like Jamie Fox who shill for casinos full well knowing the house always wins. really ? You need that paycheck from that source Jamie ?

That was taking things way too far.

I don't mind gambling and certain aspects of it - I am a casual low $, in control gambler. Discussing lines is not a problem for me amongst fans or on the boards.

That being said it shouldn't dominate the broadcast or permeate things like it has. All the ads for gambling get annoying for me (in game or commercials-- then you add the analysts who discuss their "Parlays" before the game. It was seemed better to me when online betting was sort of legal -- in Canada anyway ** - before it became fully legal and dominated broadcasts.

** In Canada, online betting from international platforms such as BET365 was never illegal. But an operator could not operate or host domestically, and commercials had strict rules - until everything changed a year or two ago and sites could operate and openly advertise here. (at least in Ontario)

For college basketball lines though, once we get 8 games in or so, Vegas lines essentially replicate (give or take a point or two) KenPom ratings with some but limited exceptions. I would say 90%-95% of the game lines are within two points of what is predicted by KenPom -- I have tracked it for a number of years for Syracuse games when people are "surprised" by lines. . There was a time several years ago that KP was not as in line with Vegas and did well - Vegas just moved their system towards KP it seems.

So you can just use KenPom rather than Vegas lines, if you want to evaluate what a team should do against somebody in terms of margin.

I'm OK with that too.

I don't mind the occasional pool or squares, but I'm already tired of the overwhelming influence of gambling in sports. A friend of a friend used to be the CTO for one of the big daily fantasy outfits early on. She couldn't tell you the difference between football and pickleball (I exaggerate) but she certainly enjoys looking at her stock valuations.
