Dungey - Who here thinks

I dont understand any of this. Get them to sign a waiver/release. Tell them all the associated risks. Let them play if they want.

The lawsuits all involve players not being properly treated and/or not being fully apprised of their condition and the associated risks, right?

I think we're all missing the real issue here, we should be hoping for a settlement of the Clayton lawsuit. Without that, the overall approach will not change.
Do we even know if that suit has merit? Don't settle unless you know your position is weak and if your position is strong, then duke it out.

It is relevant to the Tucker argument but not so much IMO, if you get rid of him in favor of someone more qualified it looks at though you are making improvements to your protocol. Then you settle and say "see, we made necessary changes" here's your money grab.

Hypocratic oath: do no harm. A Dr. should never release a patient until it's medically proper.
Ethical duty: A school should never play a player without medical clearance.
It's just FB. It's not important. The next 65 years of Eric's life is what's important.

^^^ You would think that would work, I agree but I have heard waivers like that are NOT rock solid... I am not an attorney though... would love to have one chime in on that as that "waiver" concept is interesting...I think the premise is you cannot waive "Legal rights"...

I pretty sure Luke Arciniega had to sign one before he could play here because of his past concussions.

It could be that Eric has been advised that the injury is not career ending but that it needs time to heal - that avoiding additional trauma for a period of time will facilitate his return to the game.

I think and hope that it's not as black and white as some might presume.

What's best for Eric is not mutually exclusive from what's best for the school or what's best for the football team.

And that's why you need to have the best evaluator making the call.

I am not blaming the physician at all. He/she calls it as he/she sees it. His/her license is on the line.

As for ethical/moral duty, these athletes are adults. Let them make an informed decision. This recent epiphany that football is dangerous is incredibly disingenuous.

And for what it's worth, I did not play football, nor will my children.

She's the only concussion specialist in Syracuse area per health grades

NYC, Boston, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Cleveland are all a 5 hour drive from Syracuse and 4 of them have NFL franchises. Can't be that hard to find a world renown Neurologist that you can drive a kid to in under 5 hours.

We aren't limited to Syracuse.

I think he may be done.

For better or worse I do not feel he is a guy you can continue to trot out as the starting quarterback if he isn't done. If he is back the staff must really invest in the other QB's on the roster knowing Dungey simply isn't capable of playing out a season if named starter.

She has BOTH an MD and a PHD.

Where are you seeing that? Everything on the link only says phd. The fact that she's a neuropsychologist instead of a neuropsychiatrist says to me she's not an MD. Though I'd happily admit I'm wrong, it's easy to prove.

I clicked on her education.

This situation would be handled much differently at a southern or Texas school such as Baylor . That is going through the Dino's thoughts as he considers his options.

This is my thinking as well. Mahoney having the game he did yesterday makes me feel much better about next year. It will help to have a more experienced and trained O Line and running game next year ... but hoping that will reduce designed QB runs and turn ED into a pocket passer doesn't guarantee his continued good health.

As 2017 plays out we'll have a series of easier games followed by a tough end of the year schedule. If I am HCDB I am wondering whether it makes more sense to get Mahoney the experience against the lesser portion of the schedule rather than wait and throw him to the wolves AGAIN with the tougher opponents after ED has been knocked out of college ball for good four games into the season.

I love ED but he has taken more hits than Snoop Dog the last couple of years, that's not something that ED or his family will want to continue happening.
