Welcome to National Macaroon Day!

National Macaroon Day honors the Macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the Macaroon doesn't stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world.

Macaroons are made from ground nuts and leavened egg whites. Coconut and potato starch is common in Macaroon recipes. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792. While monks are well known for their vows of silence, they just couldn't keep quiet about this tasty treat.

Celebrate National Macaroon Day by baking and eating macaroons. If your schedule is tight today, stop by a bakery and select some for both work and for home.

Kentucky Basketball Monitoring Quade Green, Who Will Visit Campus This Summer (kentucky.com; Roberts)

...
Class of 2017 point guard Quade Green is not on UK’s offer list yet, but he is being monitored by the Wildcats’ coaching staff, and for good reason.

Green — a 6-foot prospect from Philadelphia — averaged 14.1 points and 10.5 assists per game for the PSA Cardinals, winning the regular-season assist title by a large margin.

Kansas, Arizona, Maryland, Syracuse and Louisville are among the many schools that have extended scholarship offers to Green, who is expected to visit Kentucky this summer.

Hamidou Diallo is regarded as one of the best high school prospect nationally and is ranked by At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. as the No. 1 shooting guard in the class of 2017.

He’s a dynamic offensive player with the tools to be a tremendous perimeter defender in college, but Diallo has struggled with his outside shooting, and that continued this spring.

The 6-5 prospect from Queens, N.Y., made only eight of 48 three-point attempts (16.7 percent) during the regular season. Diallo averaged 18.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Upcoming Year Will be Important for Minnesota Gophers Basketball Program (btpowerhouse.com; Fritz)

Richard Pitino will need a consistent season and solid 2017 recruiting class to make a statement to new athletic director Mark Coyle.

After a turbulent 2015-16 season and a rough start to the offseason, Richard Pitino and the Minnesota Gophers are looking to start over.

Pitino will need to do so quickly in order to prove he has a place in the new Minnesota regime.

A page was turned when the university hired Mark Coyle as the new athletic director. The athletic department has been without a leader since last summer, when former A.D. Norwood Teague resigned due to sexual harassment reports. With a new football coach and Wednesday's Minneapolis Star Tribune report that the wrestling team was dealing Xanax, Minnesota's problems go beyond the foundering basketball program.

However, Coyle has shown that he can step in to uneasy situations. He is coming off a one-year stint at Syracuse, which had just been handed sanctions following an extended NCAA investigation that held the athletic department hostage. Prior to Syracuse, Coyle was hired as Boise State's athletic director three months after the football program was handed a three-year probation. Coyle is already a member of the Gophers family, having served as Minnesota's associate athletic director of external relations from 2001 to 2005.

If Pitino hopes to remain in that family, he'll need to develop a relationship with Coyle and regain the trust of Gopher fans.

Powerful Storm Memorial Weekend Storm Damages Wires at @Dccuse's House (PS; O'Toole)

Bursts of rain and thunderstorms Sunday caused some Central New Yorkers to change their Memorial Day weekend plans.

Strong winds uprooted trees and blew over power lines in some areas. In Cayuga County, 911 dispatchers received calls for six trees that had fallen in yards, as well as some wires that needed repairs after a storm swept through the area. Oswego County also received a handful of calls of fallen trees, 911 officials said.

Onondaga County residents also reported trees down. One tree that fell on South Orchard Drive in Geddes narrowly missed four cars in a driveway.

The most serious call was around 6 p.m. Sunday when a large tree fell onto a passing vehicle on John Glenn Boulevard near Long Branch Road in Geddes. A Baldwinsville woman was critically injured in that accident, state police said.

Earlier Sunday, the temperature dropped nearly 20 degrees when rain came through.

The total amount of rain so far this month in Syracuse, through Saturday, had been 1.16 inches.
