For those who are burying Cooney thinking

I don't like burying Cooney because it was only his first year of actually playing. He looked jittery, which should go away hopefully next year. Now if he is still this jittery during his Junior year... then I might start burying the kid.

Greg Kohls went from a seldom used sophomore player (only 38 points), to becoming one of the most prolific scorers in Syracuse basketball history. He averaged 22.1 points per game as a jr. His 26.7 points per game during his senior year is the second best effort (by Dave Bing) of any Syracuse player ever.

And he has 3 years left, three :p

People like to talk about how good DNic was. They apparently conviniently forget his deer in the headlights look early in his career. Cooney has been no worse than that. I think we'd all feel good about Cooney being as good as he was by his senior year.

I hope he turns it on this year but some of those misses last year had to make you wonder. A better shooter than GMac? I liked his effort on D but as a two guard on a team that often struggled to find the rim, his O was terrible. If you didnt lose some confidence in him than I love your optimism but I am doubting your vision care specialist's competence.

Ya I was watching some of SU's game last year and Cooney reminds me a lot of Triche on defense. Always low and always has his hands up and moving. They both deflect a lot of passes that way. Usually either leading to a turnover or a breakdown on offense for the opposing team.

I'm not burying Cooney and I think he'll be a key contributor this year. I just also think that Silent G starts at shooting guard this season. Nothing against Cooney, I just think that Silent G is bigger, more athletic, and will likely bring a better all around game. Cooney will be the first guard off the bench, though.

I liked that he hustled closing down spots in the zone.
0.7 steals per game, 11.2 minutes isn't too shabby.
Some were early season games, but others were in BE, Nova, Cincy, SJ and IU and Marquette.

I don't know. I think he's a good program guy. He'll contribute to a bunch of wins. I don't know that he'll ever start.:noidea:

I thought things started to click a little bit for him toward the end of the year. He seemed to gain confidence as the season wore on, and a lot of those shots where he missed the rim by 3 feet earlier in the season by and large went away.

I thought he had a very solid year for a freshman off the bench. What I'd like to see is Cooney being able to play the point more since we lost both guys that handled the ball last year.

Count me as a significant doubter. I agree with Otto in the Grotto. But I think that's the best likely outcome.

I wish he was GMac Redux ... but I saw what I saw in games at the end of the season.

I think comparing this kid to one of the all time greats in SU hoops history is silly. I'd be more than happy with him if he is a capable 1 and/or 2 backup and gives that extra spark on defense along with hitting some 3's when the team needs them.

he had a bad freshman year. It was disappointing based on expectations only.

How is it disappointing based on expectations only? It was pretty much a disaster by the objective statistic of 26%. Any sg who shoots 26% for the season shot poorly in my book. The expectations that he was a good shooter and that was to be his role on last years team, just magnified the patheticness. But make no mistake, 26% screams putrid all by itself, with no back story needed.

Of course players can improve. But the problem is I want a good sg for this coming year and from where Cooney is coming from, he does not look like the answer. If Cooney had played like GMac or Triche did in their freshman years then I would feel better about SU's sg position for this coming year. But he didn't. So, I'm hoping one of the unknowns (MG or Buss) is up to the task because I am pretty confident that Cooney is not. Not this year.

And the dated Waters article suggests that Cooney play - in the King of Kings and Estonia. Haven't heard a peep about him at either event. What gives?

My small association to fame, but I've spoken to Trevor and he's as confident as ever going into this year. I haven't lost doubt in him whatsoever. People give him a hard time for the last play of the Final Four. Feel bad for the kid sometimes.

You have to support these kids.

Just like some people take longer to learn different things, some players take longer to adjust to college basketball. With Cooney I think it's a matter of getting more playing time and building his confidence. He needs somebody in his ear everyday telling him how good he is., especially after the last play in the Final Four that he has probably been thinking about non-stop the last 4 months.

Right now, and last season, Cooney was very susceptible to doubts. His problems existed in his head last year, and those are usually related to confidence. What he needs is a positive influence like J.R. Smith with Woodson. I understand Gmac is his personal coach of sorts, but Gmac possibly does not have too much experience building a player's confidence.

We have to remember that college kids are younger and may not handle pressure that easily (and there is no "well he's rich so he better handle it" excuse like in pro sports). As a fanbase we have to support Trevor and root for him when he does well and tell him to try again if he does poorly. Giving up on a player is our rival's job, not ours. I personally am rooting for him to get over this temporary dry spell. I hope everyone else is too.

His overall shooting percentage was most worrisome. But he's too skilled to keep shooting so poorly.

I'd count on Cooney shooting better than McNamara in his last two years (if not this coming season). It's not like that's some exceptionally high bar. If he doesn't (keep in mind that he'll only need to shoot 34.1% from three in either season to be more successful than McNamara was), it's likely that he's not going to see much playing time.

The problem I saw with Trevor last season was his release. His arm appeared to be too far in front of him, almost like he was pushing the ball, more than shooting the ball. I am not sure if that was the same release he had in HS. Maybe he could get away with that at a lower level, but not at high D1 with the big boys. It forces him to rush his shot or risk having it blocked.

Anyways, IMHO, Trevor will need to adjust his form or he will continue to struggle.

Frankly, I think Michael G easily moves past Trevor as the starting 2G, and I think Buss may be under-rated, so I think it will be a battle for Trevor to get much more than 10 MPG if everybody stays healthy.

The odd thing about Trevor was the on his youtubes from high school he displayed a lot of ball skills. He looked like he could take the ball off the dribble and he had a variety of releases and finishes. Last season he only showed glimpses of that athleticism and ability. I remeber some people comparing him to Rex Chapman.

Maybe in Delaware he did not face quality high school competition and the speed of the college game made for a very difficult adjustment. I would've thought the redshirt would've helped him in that regard.

As others have said, he didn't look comfortable last year, especially with his stroke. Hopefully, he's more comfortable now and we'll see that on the court.

The odd thing about him last year was even after he made a three, he was still likely to throw up an airball. Usually, a guy makes one and he settles down. Cooney was either swish or brick; not much in between.

I think a better comparison for Cooney is Mike Hopkins, the human hack. Mike had a bit of an outside shot, made some threes, but was inconsistent - kind of like Cooney.

Agreed his shot even looks like Hop's

Wow, I honestly forgot about that play until I read that. I wish I still didn't remember...:(
