Ligashesky Heading to Minnesota

Just a side note , when’s the last time we ran a fake punt or fake FG. I honestly can’t recall one in the last few years. ( But I’m getting old so maybe I just forgot ? )

The last successful fakes we’ve done (IIRC) were courtesy of:
Riley FFF’n Dixon (for Heisman)

I kinda sorta vaguely remember a fake punt we tried in the last season or 2, but it failed miserably.

Our ST’s have been “Special” like the Olympics since Lig has been here.
His on-field results were majorly disappointing.
At best.

I understand your point, but I think the fake punt call would fall on Dino. That might explain why I can't remember a called fake punt or FG either.

He helped Szymt get better and that was his biggest contribution. I think he was responsible for von Marburg. That was a huge misstep.

When I think of god units, I will always remember way too many penalties.

Denaberg has done great kicking off but has been a disappointment kicking FGs. He did well not screwing up Stonehouse.

We seemed unprepared for every fake punt attempted against us. Just general incompetence across the board.

Good luck to him in Minnesota.

I don't think this is much of a loss. Guy had a lot of promise coming in, but our special teams seemed to not improve under him and may have gotten worse. To many procedural penalties.

Yeah... I dunno... he looked like a great hire on paper, but man, the on-field performance was not good.

I'd wager a guess that the lax player accountability culture under Dino had something to do with it and it wasn't all on Bob... He may have gotten a little"Ohana-ed".

There, I made a word.

punt coverage is also a reelection of your talent. Unless you play all 1st teamers, as depth goes down so will the quality of the coverage teams.

We wont know much too soon, but It would seem we have better athlete upgrades already. Lets hope so,

while true they weren't walkons.

Depending on availability this was generally the punt team

Wax
Clark
Isaiah Johnson
Barron
Sparrow
McDonald
Farmer
Kadin Bailey
Wes Hoeh
Tom Callahan (snapper)
Stonehouse (punter)

The FG kicking was horrendous

Overall the punter was fantastic. FG kicking stunk. Coverage teams stunk.

Ligashesky was better last year, this year not so much.

This season great punter bad placekicker. Last season bad punter, good field goal kicker. Regarding the specialists, maybe it was the players who made the coach.

Agree about Denaburg, Missing 3 outside 50 isn't the end of the world, but he missed 3 in the 30-50 range also. Hope he improves.

I think you have to decide what level of effort it is given.. If you run your starters out there you dont get much time with them., Yes they may be the better athletes but the cohesion of practice time is limited.

If you have higher level 2-3 guys then the drop off becomes less but you can actually practice them as well as you dont need to pull 1-2 level guys away from primary practice as much.

you only get so many hrs.

best special teams in the world - get a good kicker and a hang time punter and you got nothing to worry about.
Except for fair catching punts inside the 5, blocks in the back, illegal procedure and delay of game penalties running out the kick team, catching KOs and immediately going out of bounds, botched holds on FG attempts that lead to a TD for the other team, fair catch interference, personal fouls, off sides on KO and punt coverage, unprepared to cover fake punts ...

That's actually a pretty good summary of all the issues. They were all issues, but in particular, the fair catching deep in our territory was a repeated issue that should have been able to be corrected in some way.

Given that 1 of the 10 allowed assistant coaching positions was given to a ST coordinator, the performance of the STs under Lig was a glowing red flag. Excellent punter and a great KO guy (highly individual skill dependent) masked the poor ST play IMO

They have no full time assistant dedicated to special teams. They covered it with analysts.

Let’s see if Fran does the same.

Right. I don’t think it makes sense to use one of the 10 on ST so long as you cover it with analysts

Minnesota must not have watched the Bowl game. We know Fran watched it because he was there. Let's go after Lustig and bring him back NE-That staff at Vandy is on thin ice. If not, Robb Smith would be a great hire-Has been a very good ST coach and is from Pittsburgh-Currently an analyst for PSU, probably overlapped w/ Fran at Rutgers.

The only problem is analysts aren’t supposed to do direct coaching of players, so one of the coaches will have to run that portion of practice and work with the analyst.
