Ligashesky Heading to Minnesota

Isn’t Liggy the guy most people thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread when he was hired?
Absolutely.

His results didn't really match the expectations we had given his rep.

It happens.

They have no full time assistant dedicated to special teams. They covered it with analysts.

Let’s see if Fran does the same.
Since there really is no recruiting done for special teams, I would rather have one of the allowed recruiters focused on a position group. And better overall player quality is what helps the coverage units.

He’s going to a state where they have a better understanding of how to spell his name

Except for fair catching punts inside the 5, blocks in the back, illegal procedure and delay of game penalties running out the kick team, catching KOs and immediately going out of bounds, botched holds on FG attempts that lead to a TD for the other team, fair catch interference, personal fouls, off sides on KO and punt coverage, unprepared to cover fake punts ...
We actually blocked a punt, but gave up a first down on the play!!!
Only topped by giving up a TOUCHDOWN when attempting a FG. I have no idea why Fran B would keep him.

I won't argue some of the changes have lessened the impact of special teams. I hate to go back to Iowa again, but I watch all of their games along with Syracuse each weekend. Their special teams have been fantastic for several seasons. They had to be with the offense sucking as bad it did. :) But they had a big block punt against Nebraska and the players talked about how there was an opportunity to exploit in the Nebraska blocking scheme that the coach identified on film. Cooper DeJean has been a fantastic punt returner for them. Sure he has athletic ability but there's blocking involved also.
Man... those could be some rough, rough saturdays from a viewing perspective. Good lord...

Agree about Denaburg, Missing 3 outside 50 isn't the end of the world, but he missed 3 in the 30-50 range also. Hope he improves.
I hope he improves as well, specifically in FG accuracy.

We have had some great FG kickers.

I think you have to have a KO specialist to avoid having any run backs at all. Denaburg was very good at KO's. 56 of 62 he put into the end zone for touch-backs. That stat is impressive at least for us or any team.

Here are some others you may remember. and some field goal PAT history:

Ross Krautman had a dandy game the other night against Connecticut, converting all four of his field-goal attempts (from 22, 33, 42 and 47 yards) and each of his four PATs during that 40-10 romp by Syracuse University over the Huskies inside the Carrier Dome.

And for that, the 5-foot-7, 161-pound junior place-kicker from New Jersey should be applauded.

With his 41 field goals, he now sits in seventh place on the Orange career list behind John Biskup (57), Dave Jacobs (53), Nate Trout (49), Don McAulay (47) and both Gary Anderson (42) and Collin Barber (42). As Krautman may have as many as 19 games left in his college career, he appears to be a solid bet to end his time at No. 1 on the SU roll.

PHILADELPHIA —
A Syracuse streak that had lasted 11 years ended Saturday when kicker John Biskup missed an extra-point attempt in the Orangemen’s 43-3 victory over Temple.

Syracuse kickers had hit 262 consecutive PAT attempts, a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. record. They had not missed one since Dave Jacobs failed on Nov. 18, 1978 against Boston College.

Biskup, a redshirt freshman, made his first two kicks for the Orangemen but missed wide left with 1:47 remaining in the first half and Syracuse leading, 20-3.

ST coaches are a luxury more than anything else. ST is on the field for less than 12% of a game, meaning it’s a niche.

Kickers and punters.. you can teach technique, but in the moment, they make a great kick or they don’t. Don’t forget that the best kickers in the game don’t average 90%.

KR and PR are where a SPT coach can have the largest impact. Most KR can or should be fair caught with the new rules. Our PR team was really good this season. Catching a ball with blindness to traffic is borderline bat$pit crazy. I’d love to see how many PR Adams and Pena fair caught. At an average of 4% of gameplay, this is one area where SPT coaching really can change the dynamic. But is the juice worth the squeeze?!

The entire team wasn't organized. Penalties, repeated mistakes. How many times did our punt return unit flirt with disaster. Hope that Lig does a better job for Minny than he did for SU.

Pretty sure we kicked off out of bounds once or twice at absolute worst possible time too. Which is weird since we did more touch back this year than in the prior 15 years combined.

the best thing about the streak is that it took 11 yrs. thats just nuts.. thats 4-5 yrs for schools now.

That will go down as one of the most memorable terrible plays in all my years of following SU football.

Growing up, until I was 16 the program wasn’t very good and this record was really a big deal to me, I remember they took the crown from Alabama. When Biskup missed it was crushing. I remember after the game Mac had some quip about the miss, he wasn’t happy. Wonder as a tip of the cap to the Golden years if HCFB will bring the swinging gate back. I never ever understood it as a kid, but I miss it now.

I politely disagree, ST's can have a huge impact on the game and change field position for a struggling offense or a stout D. We so often take for granted a 50-yard punt with solid hang time or whats become a routine 48-yard field goal.

How much does Baltimore or Philly benefit from having Justin Tucker and Jake Elliott.

The Bengals lost the AFC Championship last year based on a terrible punt (and bad penalty) that set KC up for a walk off field goal.

It's a 1/3 of the team and they can make a difference in the outcome of any game!

Disagree. Him leaving us is a bonus though, because we looked inept in special teams most the time. Woefully unprepared under Dino.

Teach our inaccurate field goal kicker to fall on a botched snap. Don't ever want to see another TD run back on a botched snap.

We joke about it, but SU should be Punter/Kicker U. We should have the best kicker/punter tandem in the country every year. It should be a foregone conclusion every year that the top kicker and punter are going to SU. They should have their own number. We play in a Dome.

With Fran's new high powered offense, we may not be punting much in the future.
