This is the big weekend folks. I'm sure we dont have many on here who have followed the Iditarod, or the sport of dog mushing, but man is it a cool deal. If nobody has any issues with it, I'll be posting updates of this years race. After work today I'll be headed down the Parks Highway to Anchorage for the pre race festivities, and the official start on Sunday.

Mushers- 67 Mushers are entered in this years race.

Rudy Demoski- This ol' son of a gun. 67 years old. Hasent ran the Iditarod in 27 years. One of the first people I met when I came to Alaska, and has been a best friend of mine ever since. I'll be rooting hard for him to pull out a good finish

Local boy Lance Mackey - Back to back Iditarod Champion, 4 time Yukon Quest champion, he is always a favorite to win. Had to drop out of this years Quest, he had a few dogs get sick and pass away on the trail. I run into him at the bars every once in a while, and one night ended up somewhere on the Dalton highway with a guy feeding Lance's dogs at like 3am. (meet some guy at the bar "wanna go feed sled dogs?" " yea I do" lol idk.

23 checkpoints between Anchorage and the finish line at Nome.

One checkpoint, Anvik, is Rudys home village. He took me and my dad hunting down there this past fall. Larry Csonka hunts and fishes the Anvik river all the time. He is a house hold name down there.

Here is the starting order for the race. Rudy is happy with his 39th place start. This will let the mushers ahead of him break trail, making it nice and easy on his dogs. He said he knows plenty of places to pass, and doesnt expect to be in middle of the pack very long.

How is the starting order determined? Blind draw like the Kentucky Derby?
Linda Butcher and Rick Swenson don't compete anymore?

I dont know about Linda, but Rick withdrew from this years race citing personal reasons

Thanks for the write-up. Have you provided the contenders with Syracuse garb? We might as well profit from the similarities in public perception. Especially, good luck to Rudy! It sure would be nice to see him all decked out in Orange.

Strap up your dogs, its time they earned their keep.

Darwins Theory fifth ave .

ahh lol. My bad. This will be my first time in Anchorage, but now that I think about it I have heard of that place.

I thought you were being a about the race. lol my bad brotha

I have turned rudy into a huge Syracuse fan, and he has a Syracuse sticker on his sled. He has his lucky mushing gear, so I couldnt talk him into any Syracuse clothing. Some of his dogs have orange shoes tho!

People only watch that stuff to see the dogs crash. :)

There is something wrong with you...

I think he was making a joke about how people only watch racing to see the crashes.

Dog saftey is a huge thing in modern mushing. Lets hope all the dogs make it to Nome!

Canine Bob and his dogs will be there if he can get out of the Fairbanks City Jail by Saturday afternoon.

I was going to ask you if the dogs wore booties, but you just answered it. I would love to see it sometime live.

Holy crap!!! I've never seen Rudy looking so clean-cut and...well...soberish! Although, chances are he was hammered when that picture was taken...haha. Rudy is a truly amazing dude, and I'll be following the race rooting for him.

While in Anchorage, take the wife to the Whale's Tail Wine Bar in the Captain Cook Hotel. It's pretty cool...they have wine "vending machines" with 30-40 different types of wine. Also, the fresh Halibut tacos are the SHIZNIT brotha! Breakfast at the City Diner is a must too. Only diner I have ever been to where you can get eggs benedict, amazing home-fries, authentic biscuits and gravy (lived in Charlotte for 4 years), and ice cold craft beers on tap to help with that hang over. Have fun mang!

She died of cancer. When she was at the Garden watching a game Dennis Johnson recognized her and she got a thrill out of that. Susan Butcher
