The guy who sits behind me in the Dome has a local service company in Syracuse. He mentioned Saturday that his crew had just done some work at Scott and Missy's house earlier in the week. Said coach told them he is having the time of his life this year, spending a lot of time at IC watching Wolfgang and enjoying the calm lifestyle. Says he will most likely return to coaching but is just relishing the chance to spend time with his family. Watches Cuse games religiously and says that while he is a rabid fan on Saturdays he's secretly glad they were not 6-0 going into Va Tech so he doesn't look like a complete washout.

My guy in 319 also confirmed that the Shafer family is just delightful to be around, are indeed wonderful people and as genuine as Scott is he says Missy is unbelievable. They love upstate NY and I told him to let them know Syracuse still loves the Shafer family.

I still have this pipe dream that Shafer comes back as the DC here and with Babers Offense and Shafer's D we win the ACC championship!!

One can dream. We certainly have the linebackers for his blitz packages. Made Cam Lynch look like an NFL talent, can only imagine what he'd do with matured Franklin, Bennet, Cullen, Henderson, Thomas etc. etc.

If Cam Lynch was 3 inches taller he'd have gone to Georgia. Wasn't he the Defensive player of the year in Georgia? Kid was a tackling machine and crazy smart. We were lucky he fell into our laps and he flourished from Day 1.

Can't agree more on the quality of their character. Any time I got around him with my kids he was great.

My Syracuse man cave was featured in CNY magazine, and right after the release, Gedney called me to get my info for the Shafers. They were so impressed that they wanted to give me a bunch of stuff for my basement since they were (at the time) headed to Maryland, and didn't want some of it. 2 big boxes of stuff. I picked it up at the house, and had a great chat with Missy. I was really overwhelmed. I mean, who does that?

I liked Shafer...still do. I am glad he is enjoying life and semi-rooting for SU football. I will root for him when he gets his next job.
I hope he goes somewhere as a DC where he can get a bunch of studs to play in his system... then we hang 50 on him in the NC game. ;)

Quick story about the type of guy SS is... at the time, I'm a HS OC. I meet him at the NYSHSCAA Convention at Turning Stone, literally within days of him being announced as the HC at Syracuse.

I sit next to him while Doug Marrone and Bill O'Brien are giving a presentation. He makes small talk with me as he furiously scribbles ultra-organized notes. I couldn't discern if they were in regards to his new position, the presentation or both. He takes time to take a picture with me, BS with me for about 5 min, and then sprints out of the casino.

Sunday morning he's back in the casino to give a presentation on different coverages I believe. He comes directly up to me and addresses me by first name. Laughs about how he's the HC at Syracuse and got the JV time slot at the convention to speak. Picks on everybody for being to hungover and lazy to make the presentation on time.

Over the next two years I see him at the same clinic, the SU Coaches Clinic and the SU Team Camp multiple times. He always remembered personal pieces of our conversations. He always addressed me.

Over that same timeframe, I got to know Tim Daoust pretty well too. By their final year here, they allowed me full access to practices and any film cut ups I wanted to use for studying. I simply had to call and ask.

They took this approach with any coach at any level that I ever saw them interact with. They were always willing to help anyway possible.

A lot of people may not have liked him as a coach, but, I will always defend him for many more reasons than listed here.

Did his daughter end up going to Maryland?

A few years ago I flew home for the BC football game, and two basketball games. Before I left, I tweeted SS saying "Coach, I'm flying in from Alaska to watch you beat the crap out of BC". I figured it would get some re-tweets, and maybe he'd hear about it. I ran into him at halftime of the Indiana basketball game, a few days after we beat BC. Approached him, introduced myself and mentioned I came from Alaska. His eyes got big, he says "That was you?!" He yells across the room to his wife and says "Hey Missy! This is the guy that came from Alaska!" Looked back at me and said "Man, I'm glad we won then!".

The amount of stuff that dude had on his plate every day, I never would have thought that he would read that tweet, tell his wife about it, and remember it 2 weeks later while meeting one of the 50 or so people lined up to talk to him. He will always be a favorite of mine.

My wife and I have met the Shafer family several times and they are really wonderful people.

My 5 year old daughter cried her eyes out when the news announced he was let go. I have it all on video too.

Shaf is a great DC and is a football coach to his core, so this would never happen, but he is a guy who could thrive in some role inside the Cuse AD. Probably a tough move politically to make, but as a boss, I try to hire good people, and Scott is good people. Wildhack could do way worse if there was something, a position (Assistant AD) that might work. ugh, too bad it would never happen.

Yep, we lured Cam and Dungey away from Harvard to the Harvard of CNY.

That's pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Now that's really special. Coaches switch jobs so much, I can't imagine how quickly most of them just trash that stuff. For them to remember and take the time to give things to a fan who would enjoy it is just awesome

That's exactly the way I felt about it. Certainly he kept things sentimental to him, but as a fan, I got some unique things the average guy doesn't get. Now they have sentimental value to me.

When it comes to having lived in Syracuse, there are two different kinds of people: Those who never want to leave and those who never want to come back.

I can honestly say I have never rooted for a coach to succeed as much as I did for Shafer. I will continue to root for him wherever he goes. Wish him all the fortune and happiness this world can provide.
Go Shaf!
