SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes will hold its third annual "Lift for Life" event on Wednesday, July 20. "Lift for Life" is the signature fundraising event for the Uplifting Athletes nationwide network of college football student-athlete led chapters.

This year's event will take place at 7 p.m. inside Manley Field House and is open to the public. Parking is free in the Manley North Lot.

Last summer, Syracuse's first public "Lift for Life" raised more than $11,000 to help fight anaplastic astrocytoma in honor of former Orange punter Rob Long. Long was diagnosed with a rare malignant brain tumor in 2010 and has since made a full recovery.

The mission of Uplifting Athletes is to empower people to take action against rare diseases and inspire the medical community to find cures. This year's "Lift for Life" goal is $15,000. To support the Syracuse chapter in its fundraising efforts, click here.

Similar to last year, the Orange football roster has been divided into nine teams. The teams will compete in a variety of events, including a tire flip race and prowler push. The top four teams advance to the semifinals where a plate hold will determine the two finalists. The finalists will then engage in a tug-of-war to decide the 2016 "Lift for Life" champion.

Supporters are invited to select a team and back that group with their donations. After the event, fans are invited onto the field for selfies and autographs with their favorite Orange players.

The Syracuse chapter joined Uplifting Athletes in 2013 when it joined Uplifting Athletes to help honor Long, who continues to be a strong advocate in the fight against rare diseases and a passionate supporter of the Syracuse chapter.

ABOUT UPLIFTING ATHLETES
A nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. With a network of university chapters run by current college football student-athletes that spans all the major conferences, Uplifting Athletes has had an economic impact of more than $400 million on the rare disease community. Please, if you can, pitch in as much as you're led. Doesn't have to be 100 bucks. 5 bucks, 7, etc. is just fine.

Support the Syracuse Chapter of Uplifting Athletes

Orange Nation,

For the fourth summer in a row the Syracuse Football Family is coming together to raise money and provide a voice for people whose lives have been affected by rare diseases. The football team will be hosting a Lift for Life Event to raise money through Uplifting Athletes for the rare disease community. Since the creation of our chapter in 2013, we have raised over $30,000 that has been donated for rare disease research and programming.

Uplifting Athletes is a national non-profit organization that has grown to nearly 30 chapters at different schools nationwide. Our goal is to make our Lift for Life a keynote event in the city of Syracuse and continue our team’s goal of serving the rare disease community.

This year, our Lift for Life event will take place on Wednesday, July 20. The event, that is open to the public, is going to be held at Manley Field House at 7 pm. The whole team will participate in this competition as an effort to maximize our impact and fundraise together. This event is organized with our team divided into competition groups, where we will compete in different exercises for team points. However, part of the competition will also include which team can raise the most money, as the amount of money raised for each team will be factored into the final score.

Your support is needed to help us reach our monetary goal. Please click here and make a donation. Feel free to donate to your favorite player’s competition team, or to make a general donation. Any amount is appreciated and your support is needed.

Please join us and help make our 2016 campaign the best yet. Together we can work to continue our mission to provide funding to researchers looking for cures and treatments in the rare disease community. We appreciate your support and I know that the sentiment is shared throughout the rare disease community.

Together, We Are Stronger!

Jason Emerich #78

Syracuse Football raising money for brain cancer research through Uplifting Athletes (CNYCentreal.com; Murnane)

The Syracuse University Football team is always lifting in the offseason, but on July 20 it will be to save lives.

Uplifting Athletes is a football student-athlete run nonprofit organization with the mission to raise money for those affected by rare diseases. Syracuse began their own chapter in 2013 in honor of Rob Long, a former Orange punter affected by a rare form of brain cancer. It is called grade III anaplastic astrocytoma and it restricted Long from competing in the Pinstripe Bowl that year.

The team has never stopped supporting Long in his fight against brain cancer, however, they now have a new motivation. This new motivation is a 7-year-old girl from Mexico, New York named Lilian Belfield. Lilian has also been affected by a rare form of brain cancer called ananplastic astroblastoma, but that has not slowed her down.

As of this morning the players have raised $8,430.00, 56% of their goal of 15K. Team Emerich has raised an impressive $3,100.00 followed by Team Anthony $1,700.00 and Team Dungey $1,655.00
