Why does JB coach differently in Nov/Dec than March?

Have we always had a problem scoring? Or is this a 2 year blip?
It was more of a sarcastic response to his generic JB sees him everyday in practice.

Maybe he can figure out an offensive philosophy while he's at it.
It's amazing he was won the number of games he has with no offensive philosophy? We have been to 5 final fours. UConn has been to 5 final fours. We look very closely at our short comings but not the short comings of other schools. There aren't many that we would change places with. We have a lot of ncaa upsets because we are in the tournament every year.

Breakdown of number of players that played in over 30 games in a season and averaged over 30 min per game in a season. I found it interesting that our best year for wins (34 in 2012) we only had one guy averaging over 30mpg and we had 9 play in 30 games.

We had a great team in 2012. We didn't this year. We were 25-0 partly because we played as a team in the summer. We were way ahead of teams at the start of the season. Plus, we got hot winning close games. We were in a rebuilding mode this year after losing two guards and a starting forward that could shoot. Our record was also aided by playing in a lousy conference. let's face it, the ACC was not strong this year.

Can you also add margin of victory? That plays a role in how many minutes players play.

In 2003 we had 3 players average over 30 minutes a game - 2 played over 35 minutes/game.

fab... Onuaku... Keith smart... tony delk... Marcus liberty.

We also brick shots at the beginnings of games...yet none of the "we need a bench" crowd has an answer for that. I have one. We suck at shooting and don't run enough. The fatigue argument is fatigued.

jb doesn't coach different in November and December, early in the season other teams haven't seen the strengths of the team for that current year so we are able to win games vs other top teams in non conference. Later in the season teams are planning to exploit any weaknesses our team has

I agree with this for this season. The team got hot early and won relatively CLOSE games against mediocre competition before those teams started playing better.

SU didin't improve, Coleman goes down, and the bench didn't get utilized enough for whatever reasons.

Not enough offensive skill anyways to make a F4. From shooting, ballhandling, passing. Opposing coaches all saw this as the regression happened.

We've been to 5 Final Fours in just barely in my lifetime...

UConn's been to 5 Final Fours in my adult lifetime.

I'm not that old.

To put it another way. UConn is averaging a FF once every 3 years and a title once every 5 years. We're averaging a FF once every 8 years and a title once every 38 years. I guess I can look forward to 2021, 2029, and 2041 when we finally get another championship!!

CJ is better conditioned than the average college kid, and the average kid can run up and down the court all day long.

If playing 3-4 minutes less a game would make that much of a difference, CJ better find a park bench and learn how to play chess.

I have been thinking about this and part of this is mainly it's because I am an orange fan and look at them more closely but has anyone had worse luck than JB? Yeah he has had his flame out but, No. 3 Duke. No. 2. Kansas, and No 1. Wichita State all fell before the 16. Lets look at this

1987- One buzzer beater shot from the whole perspective of Boeheim being taken differently.
2010- Best team in the country by a mile lost A.O. right before probably would have won it all.
2012- Fab blew it and we lost in the elite 8. I still think we fall to Kentucky but at least we make it to that game.

Starting from 2009 after the NIT years if A.O. doesn't go down we have
2009- S16
2010- FF
2011-32
2012-FF
2013-FF
2014-32

If things had fallen the other way not being Boeheim's fault man would that have been something.

Arm chair philosophizing - JB tightens up as the year goes on, the players respond in kind, thus we consistently see a late season slump then we roll the dice in the tournament.

That's nice, but we don't have those other FF's. The history book has already been written. We win the National Champion next year, every year in my book.

Yeah, the thought that we didn't improve through this year came to me about a month ago when the struggles were becoming evident. I have no insight was to why not, but I think it's correct that we did not.

Take it one step further, we actually got worse as the season went along. It's the opposite trend you want to see.

UK, Wisc and UConn all took some big lumps during this season and they recovered and improved. We did the opposite.

What that tells me is that the bigger margins of victory has the fewer players over 30mpg. Makes sense.

I'm not so sure - other than shot-making - we actually got worse. We always had issues, it's just that when we were making more shots, they were less noticeable. Once the ball stopped going in, the other issues stood out a lot more. We transitioned from winning ugly to losing ugly. And yes, a lot of other teams around us got better while we didn't which seems to make it look like we regressed.

Or, maybe you're right, we did get worse. Not that it matters now.

Oh I agree. Way more skilled personnel though on Wisc/UK especially. You just see it watching them. How well most of them can dribble, shoot, pass, etc.

True. Many of us were scolded when we were concerned about "winning ugly."

There is nothing wrong with winning a game or two ugly, the problem is we did it every game practically, against teams that good teams would have blown out. It was hard not to get excited at 25-0, but we all saw the writing on the wall.

Precisely. When it became a pattern it was a concern.
