$100 million in NY, county money for Onondaga Lake project, officials say

First off, I don't care how much dredging or waste treatment they do, that lake will never be clean in mine, yours or our children's lifetimes. As far as concerts go, I don't go to those concerts DMB, Phish, etc.

Also, are you comparing the SPAC venue in Saratoga, a fantastic city, to an amphitheater next to the 3rd most polluted lake in the world? Did the SPAC cost $30 million? My guess is that the prices that you are used to at the SPAC will not be the same as here if the venue costs $30 million or more.

The smell of the lake is worse in my mind since the dredging. You can smell it clear as day from 690 even in the winter. Don't know what that means for the cleanup if anything.

I'm sure The Task Force assigned to this project will make sure the new Amphitheater is downwind.

PS - Amphitheater is a tough word to spell.

You are naturally going to smell things when you stir them up. Necessary part of the cleanup process.

Yeah, the actual dredge material is being brought above the surface now. Of course the stench is going to be more noticeable. Also, I'd say that 95% of the "stench" associated with Onondaga Lake has nothing to do with the chemicals in the water. It is mostly just the smell of algae from stagnant areas of the lake, which is not uncommon in a lot of lakes around here.

I think the algae problem is only a summer thing . The chemical smell is naphthalene according to one article I found. There are also "tar beds" not near the lake that cause odor problems near the lake.

As a resident of Saratoga who's attended dozens of SPAC shows as well as dozens of shows nationally (ive been to alot of venues) I can say that SPAC blows in terms of seeing a show, and that can even include being in the pavilion.

A well designed ampitheatre with the lake and city as a backdrop would be as asthetically nice as any place in the nation save for a few.

Syracuse could absolutely use a great outdoor concert venue. Sad really to see bands go from Darien Lake or Finger Lakes to SPAC skipping right over Cuse with their 20-30k attendance figures depending on the artist.

Who draws that many? Over the past few years at SPAC I can say that Tom Petty, Kid Rock, The Police, all the big country guys, REM and Bon Jovi have as well as multi night runs by DMB and Phish. I know I'm missing others. Pearl Jam sells out 20k pretty easily. Iron Maiden sold out Darien Lake a couple of years ago. Metallica pulls them in if you're fortunate to even book them.

There's others I'm just drawing a blank, though a lot of bands can get easily get to 15k if paired correctly with good opening acts. Lenny Kravitz, Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Allmans, ZZTop etc. You put some of the heavier bands together like Rage, Tool, Godsmack. Korn etc you'd hit 20k easily.
