It has been 16 years of Post McNabb football

I just do not have the energy right now to defend this program week after week, season after season

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results

I have defended and defended for the better part of 16 brutal seasons (outside a few outlier years).

Enough is enough for now

I like HCSS and wish him the best - but he is not the answer

There is talent here - that I do not question ... We lack program (ie AD) talent and coaching talent

Until those areas improve, we will continue to be a middling, afterthought of a program whose glory years fade dimmer with each loss and losing season.

I want a winner ... Call me a front runner, don't care

I'm tired of Looking around college football and seeing programs who have no history or tradition, that have sucked ass for decades all of a sudden being competitive and winning, consistently - while Syracuse continues to be a non factor and punching bag.

Someone mentioned Bo Pelini ... Not sure he is the answer but I hope Mr Coyle has one

Enough is enough - raise the talent in the AD and on the coaching staffs, otherwise we can continue to see the same disappointing results week after week and season after season.

I am tired of this losing .

My parents were visiting me last weekend (I live in akron, they reside in syracuse). We watched the USF game. They usually watch a lot of the games, probably more basketball fans though, but definitely don't really get up to the dome (they both work at SU). Obviously I am a diehard (whatever that means). When the game ended, my dad just walked away from the TV shaking his head while my mom sarcastically said "are you surprised?"

This, my friends, is a prime example of how our program is perceived. With regards to attendance, there just isn't much wiggle room. You have to win.

My parents ask me why I continue to put myself through it every week and every season

Like I said in the other thread hire the Memphis coach ASAP

Sadly, it's what it's all about.

Coyle has a tough call.

A lot to consider other than wins and losses.

Hope he makes the right call.

I get all the griping about the coaches, and I'm not completely happy either. But if our ab doesn't bobble a first down snap at the 2 yard line and our captain lb not grab a favemask, we win this.

My biggest issue is the defensez

I'm at the point I have no idea what to think. I'm frustrated but trying not to be too reactionary. But, this isn't just 2 games in a row.

My problem is every week there is always an excuse. It is time to stop making excuses.

It's not just that it's the bad coaching and personel decisions week after week. A slow developing run play with no lead blocker on 3rd and 4th and goal, absolutely terrible clock management week after week, Whigham somehow still starting despite clearly not being able to play cb at he d1 level, play Prevent coverage d wand not blitzing a Virginia qb who clearly can't handle a hint of pressure, not featuring Frederick despite clearly being the best run rb, zero wr depth etc etc.

I don't think it's a tough call at all. Coyle is brand new, its the easiest call to make right now. Since he is so new he has the built in excuse that hey I want my own guy in place at head coach to lead the program. Not personal but I just got this job and this is how I want my time at Syracuse to start here. If he keeps Shafer beyond this year then it becomes a tough call down the road

He will wait until loss 7, if there is no change then, HCSS may get one last year

No more excuses no more moral victories.

Wins and loses are all that matter. That's what head coaches are judged on in this country in all sports.

It's no tougher next year than this year.

I have no problem with another year.

But it will depend on how the team plays the last six games.

Yes it is because then other coaches use Shafer's instability to recruit against us. Other coaches will love to say that Shafer is coming off 2 bad years, you don't want to go there cause one more bad year and the AD will fire him. And who knows if the next head coach at Syracuse will like you, come here don't go there...blah blah blah. He is on his last legs there. SO MUCH BETTER to pull the band aid off fast now and give him his walking papers and move on. Coyle being a new AD has this gift wrapped for him to make this move and nobody would questions it. Easiest move for him to make right now. It's a no brainer type of move

Good post and well said. With respect to sports, there's nothing more gut wrenching and hard than being the Syracuse football fan. Barring a major paradigm change (dramatic new stadium, huge increase in coaching pay, etc.), it is not going to change and the continued erosion in the Fanbase will continue. No doubt all of this is part of the reason I've pulled back somewhat in terms of interest and attendance myself. How long can one hang in there? I guess as long as it takes certainly and I'll try and hang in there, but man is the self-defeating.

I think the football gods are telling me to get a new sport. My high school team (wgsh) is 0-6 losing last night something like 67 to nothing, my college alma mater hasn't won a game in three years on something like a 0-25 skid, and Syracuse continues to disappoint and rip your heart out.

From a sporting perspective it sucks while from a life perspective I try to tell myself to stop caring, which following this program makes it increasingly easier to do. My post game depression is shorter and shorter, especially as it's time to route on the Cubs.

Calling time outs at bizzaro times but then not calling time out except to "ice" the kicker while letting the trailing team run out the clock. There is a reason SS has been a career asst.

Agree completely and hope a search committee is already being formed. Since 2000 we've hired two head coaches without one and the results show without a doubt that's not the right way to go. Shafer was an average to slightly better than average DC over his career. He is clearly, clearly in over his head against P5 competition as a head coach.

Just called Direct TV and dropped the Sports Pkg. Finally, 16 years of agonizing is over. I'm a homer with orange-colored glasses, but no more kool-aid for me. Our recruiting may be on the upswing, but it remains near the bottom in the ACC. Say what you will and call me names, (a few of you hangers-on will), but too many newcomers have hit pay dirt while we around with mediocrity. At 74 I remember lots of good old days for our football program. There was never a time we would lose three straight to Virginia....until these last 16 years. We used to eat up programs like that for breakfast. . At least I have my (many) good memories of a bye gone era, ...and a quality education. Thank you, SU.

Good insight and perspective, Stern. You see it from a managerial point of view.

My biggest issue is the defensez

And isn't supposed to be Mr. Hard Nose's area of strength? That defense is a joke and has been consistently exposed by below average offenses since he took over as head coach.
