Quick thoughts on Gettleman/Shurmur...
1) Gettleman - I don’t think people understand how long it takes to turn over a roster. You may not like the fact that he dumped Vernon, Collins, Snacks & Odell, but tbh, it’s not looking like a bad idea at the moment.
The Giants have a ton of cap space and look to have drafted some solid young talent...
His whole mantra was to compete while re-shaping the roster, that didn’t work. But I think he at least gets another year and most likely two to finish the work behind his blueprints... I’m actually a little higher on what he’s done than most. Not a lot of dead weight right now, he’s got a lot of clay and $ to work with.
Year 3 is a BIG year.
2) Shurmur - a lot of people point to the defenses failures and say that you need a new DC. Well, he hired his DC and oversaw how Betcher ran his unit. It’s been outright bad at times.
Through the entire season I saw a defense that was not on the same page and communicated poorly. That’s on the DC and Shurmur. I get that a lot of the secondary was young, but that’s no excuse for the guys who’d been playing all year to not even understand their assignments.
Betcher must go.
As far as Shurmur, I don’t mind his offense. Some ply calls are frustrating but I see the potential. That’s about the only piece of his plan that I’ve thought was ok.
The defense, game management and player control has been sub par. I hate hitting the reset button too soon, but right now, I think it’s justified given that the Giants get their candidate to replace.
Tough year, very tough. I think better days are on the horizon though.
