Some college coaches show they can be pro coaches. Rhule is one of them IMO. His teams are always prepared and he gameplans like a pro coach.

I get it if the Giants don’t want to gamble but they need a guy who prepares the talent they got and plus him being a college coach he will relate to their young studs IMO.

The new Giants HC has to be a tough smart coach they have gone for offensive coordinators and their teams have been really Undisciplined. If the Giants got a smart HC they have enough to be a playoff team next year:
If they just hire a coordinator they will struggle next year.
Rhule has done well turning around Temple and Baylor. That should be good enough for most Giants fans. Plus he is a born and bred NYC kid who Mara and Tisch know. That checks off a lot of boxes.

Close to $70 million in cap space, and that is one area I am extremely worried with Gettleman back. Drafting has been his forte, but free agency/trades have not been. Mara and Tisch took a half measure when they should have took a full one.

My concern with Rhule is that any college coach is a risk. And this will be the third risk hire in a row and the first two did not work out. McAdoo had never been a head coach. Shurmur was the "failed" head coach. Now we are going to be the proving ground for yet another college head coach trying to make the leap.

We have a lot of cap room and yet another top five pick. With the right guy, this can get turned around - but we need the right guy...

Like I said, Rhule checks off a lot of boxes. But no matter who they choose, there will be questions. And for Gettleman as well.

I actually think the Giants are better positioned than in a long time.
After both of the last coaching changes the Giants roster was saddled with high priced aging veterans. That’s been gutted with pieces of solid young talent.

Coupled with an impact draft slot, alot of cap space offers opportunity to add the right pieces.

I think the Giants job is a great opening, and I think Gettleman’s presence (negative) is being exaggerated.

Love Matt Rhule, would like McDaniels similarly (even though I don’t think he bites). I think there’s immediate opportunity for improvement and a quick turnaround.

Couple of immediate position changes imo that are necessary...

1) Both Bethea and M. Thomas need to be replaced - their age showed. Yes Thomas was good on ST’s, but that can be filled pretty easily.

2) LT / RT to a lesser extent. Solder has not earned his pay, but you’ve pretty much got to stick with him for 2020 barring a trade. I think Halapio at C is serviceable. Hernandez needs to be better in pass pro.

3) Edge rusher - re-sign Golden ASAP. Ximines showed promise and Carter was a bit of a disappointment this year. Need a stud here on the other side. I think both ILB spots are ok but could be upgraded. It’s time to move on from Ogletree.

4) and probably most importantly - Giants need a physical presence on the outside at WR. We’re fine just about everywhere else with the skills, need a true #1 on the edge though.

yes, its Rhule or McDaniels and I do not think Gettleman will be negative.

im guessing hes already been asked to take a lesser role in some things, FA is where McDaniels will have an edge over Rhule, but im still in Ruhle's camp.

as for your points...

1) yes, both are gone
2) solder will move to RT if need be. Halapio is done for the year (& Giants career). must find a Vet FA C who could help out willie.
3) Golden will cost too much. agree with the rest. this will need to be addressed in the draft as well as FA
4) those are hard to find, but we have the slot and the big play guy

theres a lot to like about this team now. if Rhule doesnt take it, then its on Mara & Tisch. i think young college guys can do it in the pros, old guys cannot. that 1 year with TC will speak VOLUMES, while Rhule obviously had ties to temple, im pretty sure i read TC was instrumental in getting him the top gig, looking for the article now.

heres one. now i remember, theres others out there too. when he left, they all knew he was walking out to success.

bring him the Fluck back.

Surprised to see you so bullish on Ruhle...the list of college guys who have had a lot of success in the pros is a pretty short list...Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll, Coughlin, Vermeil, Walsh, Coryell...and four of those six guys did it several decades ago...and both Coughlin and Carroll had extensive experience in NFL as both assistant and head coach...

Ruhle has none of that, other than 1 year with Gints as asst OL coach...just curious why you think that Ruhle is going to be the exception? What is it that you really like about him?

the league has changed, even in the last 10 years.

its now a 'college league'.

college plays with college age kids.

you have to know how to deal with all the young kids, know what makes them tick and how to keep them happy.

i like that hes a New Yorker, i liked that he spent a year here and everyone loved him.

i like that he has had success and does not have a 'system' he adapts to his players, not the other way around which is the cause of much failure.

i could be wrong, but i do NOT WANT A RETREAD coach like this, nor do i care for another Coordinator getting his 1st gig.

Rhule has been a HC for 7 years so he understands how to be a CEO of kids and with his success, he knows how to coach.

but to Bayside's point, the talent pool seems much better and certainly deeper than in jan of 2018.

Gettleman's presser, wow "We've hired 4 computer folks". I'd have loved for that to be probed a little more.

The Leonard Williams trade, and his ramblings about that still are horrible, just a bad trade. Just a used car salesman, and really don't know what Mara/Tisch like about him.

I think Williams is a stud. Guy was in that backfield a lot, and when he wasn’t it was usually because he was drawing doubles. Funny how often we started hearing Tomlinson’s name after we got Williams.

Assuming we resign him, I’m ok with that trade. You can say we could’ve signed him anyway, but who knows? Getting him on the team already may give us a leg up.

We’ve got plenty of young role players. Drafting a couple more in rounds 3 and 5 isn’t going to move the needle much. We need some veteran studs that are pro bowl caliber. Williams gives us one on defense. We need more.
