I've been watching baseball "for a few years". I. Have. Never. Seen. Anything. Like. That. Before.

Someone interpret this for me, please. Is Rupert criticizing Cashman for not getting Greinke who has a "no-trade-to-the-Yankees" clause in his contract or what am I missing?

Yankees' Talks For Robbie Ray Reportedly Stalled

No wonder we didn't make a deal. Arizona wanted a 4 player package for Robbie Ray. Did he suddenly morph into Randy Johnson in his prime?
The Ellisbury money is killing the Yankees. If their owners don’t want to go over a certain number those 23 million from Ellsbury are killing them.'Unique Deadline': Yanks quiet, but comfortable
NEW YORK -- The text messages continued to ping on Brian Cashman's phone into Wednesday's Trade Deadline, a flood of short-hand proposals wrapped in blue or green digital bubbles. One by one, the Yankees general manager shook his head, volleying counterproposals to colleagues that went...www.mlb.com
Cashman was asked if he regrets not pursuing Patrick Corbin and Dallas Keuchel more feverishly when both starters were free agents.
"If you turn the clock back to Corbin, there’s a lot of guys sitting in that locker room that wouldn’t be here, because all that money would have gone in one direction," Cashman said. "It’s all inter-related. … We repackaged that money and produced various assets like DJ LeMahieu and [Adam Ottavino], amongst others. That might not have materialized if we went all in on one particular player."

Depends on if they were A ball players or were top 10 prospects.Yankees' Talks For Robbie Ray Reportedly Stalled

I guess it depends on the other 3 players. Not all 5 player packages are alike. They may have asked for 2 good prospects, and when they could not get get that asked for 1 good + 3 low end prospects.
The Yankees them makes themselves look better by leaking a 4 player offer. But that doesn't really mean anything by itself.
The Orioles got 5 pieces for Manny Machado last year. but IIRC none were top 10 Dodger prospects.
They wanted Frazier and Schmidt to start, plus 2 more. For Robbie Ray Ray thats insane.
Plus he choked a girl, allegedly.Chapmans act is getting old quick.
Why do we never get DLsbury status updates??
Seriously.
The Yankees must’ve told him to just go away, don’t come back, and look for the monthly check.
Exactly.Him and Bird are on one of the dozens of lakes in the adirondacks drinking beer and reliving the glory days. Ellsbury hasnt played in 2 years because of God knows what. Guys with compound leg fractures and TJ have made it back faster.

My guess, and this is just a guess, is that Ellsbury can't play baseball again because of his hip. And because he's injured, the Yankees are collecting insurance against his salary. If Ellsbury retires, he forfeits his remaining salary - which he won't do because why would anyone do that? If the Yankees release him, he gets the remainder of his salary but the Yankees no longer receive the insurance payments. If he can at least be healthy, let’s eat 50-75% of what’s left of the contract next year and ship him off.
I don't know, they're spending an awful lot of money on guys that can be easily replaced. They're spending $62m on Happ, Chapman, Britton, Gardner, and CC. Outside of Mo, there isn't a closer or reliever in baseball that should be making more than $10m/year. Billy Beane has that part figured out, bring in some failed starters make them a closer let them rack up some saves and then trade them. On a per year basis, Happ is making only $6m less than Corbin is, and Happ isBeyond Ellsbury the Yankees spending is being used smart.
I never knew Happ was pregnant.
