The NFL has a "Physically Unable to Perform" List which I think is different than an injury list in that they don't count against rosters, but the team retains their rights, and they still get paid. Why doesn't baseball have one, too?My guess, and this is just a guess, is that Ellsbury can't play baseball again because of his hip. And because he's injured, the Yankees are collecting insurance against his salary. If Ellsbury retires, he forfeits his remaining salary - which he won't do because why would anyone do that? If the Yankees release him, he gets the remainder of his salary but the Yankees no longer receive the insurance payments.
So, by keeping him on the IL indefinitely, the Yankees and Ellsbury are basically committing technically legal insurance fraud. He's injured, and he may play again, but he probably won't and this just keeps the scam running.

Unfortunately for the Yankees that's just about everybody currently on the SWB RosterA guide to potential August transactions
Welcome to August. It’s a new world out there. In years past, the July 31 Trade Deadline was important, but not the final opportunity for clubs to acquire talent for the stretch run. Justin Verlander’s Aug. 31 trade from the Tigers to the Astros in 2017 stands out as thewww.mlb.com
Under the new rules adopted this season, no player that has been on a Major League contract at any point in 2019 may be traded until after the World Series, meaning only players on Minor League deals who have not been promoted to the big leagues this year can be dealt.
Buckle up. Looks like Chapman in the 9th facing the middle of the Sox order.
Well that was a walk in the park.Fingers crossed, would be nice to tack on a run or two.
Imagine having the over in that game?? At the end of 1, you are betting your winnings.Just your normal 2 hour, 41 minute Yankees -Sox game with 6 runs scored in the 1st inning.
