2021 Fall Camp Starts Friday August 6th

Even if TD wins the job I think Cuse should have a few packages for Shrader, especially around the goal-line when a running QB can be very important.
I just don't see Dino rotating QBs at the goal line. If anything, he wants his started to get as many reps as possible unless it is a blowout or he realizes this is not what he is looking for in a starting QB.

ED’s senior year/ Tommy’s rs frosh year. Tommy had built in series against wmu before it was a blow out and once it got close again. I would expect babers to do something similar against Ohio, especially if the game feels in hand.

Well Ed was the ESTABLISHED starter. There is not one this year.

This was my interp as well - gotta be TD as of now.

Also, and not trying to be a negative Nancy like some, it bears a reminder that Mike Leach moved Shraeder to WR at MSU. I know he started some games at QB in the SEC but that is a red flag to me and should be kept in perspective as we set expectations.

I wouldn’t read in to it too much except Shrader wasn’t Leach’s guy and didn’t fit his system. If anything I’d say it shows his athleticism if Leach moved him to WR and didn’t just drop him on the depth chart as QB and leave him there.

Also, he doesn’t seem to have been relegated to a shed. So he seems to have a good work ethic and isn’t a whiny……

That would lead to all the more reason to add a series for shrader (assumed back up). I also could see Dino throwing a series or two for shrader to make Rutgers have to prep for both.

Sure you have
We will have an idea by halftime of the Rutgers game whether TD has improved to the point where he can make something happen when things break down.
For Syracuse to win in this league, we need a QB who can make plays under duress. We will never have the personal to just line up, and impose our will on the opponents.

Again based on what im hearing i expect Shareder to start by ACC schedule

The only thing that make sense with this is that there's an expectation Tommy will be hurt by then.

I just don't get the "we think one guy will win the job, but by game 5 the other guy will be the better choice" concept after a week of camp.

I agree, unless it is a case of "the other guy doesn't have a complete handle on the offense yet but we expect him to in another month." Or "one guy is currently ahead so he will start but we expect him to flame out after a few games so we'll then turn to the future."

The latter is good because if we hit the wall right out of the gate and then start building for next year, then this year doesn't count. Right now, the only other thing we could point to to explain a bad season is the delta variant or if we got lucky, some inopportune injuries. Those are kind of weak so the "building for the future" thing would help to take the heat off in some minds. Again, this only comes into play if we suck in the OOC segment of the schedule but it never hurts to have your ducks in a row if there's even a chance you might have to face the music.

And the problem with the first one is that transfers play everywhere right away. If they are a better fit, you simplify early on.

Our offense sure doesn’t look very complex on the field. Shrader was here for the spring and all of fall. But magically when we start the difficult part of the schedule, he’ll be ready.

Nope. The future in NOW.

And they may simplify for him. I'm just hoping that whomever they go with doesn't just beat out #2 but also can get the job done against our opponents. Beating out other SU QB's is meaningless otherwise.

Not going to know about TD until we see him respond to pressures in games. Can he make things happen when the pocket isn’t perfect? Can he use Queeley and the TE?
I don’t care at all about what we hear from practices and even scrimmages.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone voice the opposite of this take

Going to post the Cali Award thread Friday or Saturday.

Was weird last year with covid and not knowing how/if we’d have a season.

I’m glad to see the usual suspects, yours truly included, finding reasons to get excited again.

My eyes have been on Alford, Courtney, Javontae, Mang, Bergeron, Howard, Tucker and Pena for the O

When has Dino ever dropped a depth chart nugget?

I took it immediately that the 4th and 5th string guys will get less reps...maybe even the 3rd string guy. My gut tells me this is still a 2 horse race.

Then he should start vs Ohio. Why not get him ready for the Liberty game? And have him be further developed by the ACC? If he starts the ACC opener and that decision isn't made until after the Liberty game, we aren't going bowling.
Who knows. My 2 cents is TD is doing very well in practice and Dino is going to go with him to start.
