Check swings are more often called on your body movement than whether you attempted to strike the ball.I agree it was a bad call, but check swings are almost impossible to get right in real time.

Not by a base umpire. the Home plate umpire should never make that call on his own. For God's sake, he is watching the pitch. Not the hitter.

I didn’t see the post before (wasn’t on this thread for awhile) but I could easily deduce that someone said it.

I assume umps are evaluated and he’ll get dinged. You would typically let a close one go to the appeal. Even though I always found it a little weird that a guy 95 feet away could make such a split second call. They’re easy to make and criticize with replay.

Cole and Higashioka were both in a groove. Batters were frozen on those called third strikes. They were looking for pitches that never came. They knew they were strikes. They just walked to the dugout without even looking back at the ump.

I understandably wanted no part of Chapman Saturday, but up 5 runs in the 9th is a perfect spot for him to get some work in, with other pen guys ready in case it goes south. If he can't start that inning then might as well cut him if you can't trade him.

They would ask, why would the Yankees who are still very much in a playoff hunt, trade him? I just don't think anyone would trade for him, certainly no bad team, and I don't think the yanks would give up anything with him to make that work. Better to try and fix him.

After the Sox finish off the sweep next Sunday the Yankees should be in full fire sale mode.
