2022 Portal

I think he thinks his teams are going to be better than they are and I question some of his basketball decisions recently even when I predicted they would happen. The talent isn't the best it's ever been, but he's also mismanaged it.

There was the pg debacle in 20-21...

The 16-17 team was torpedoed from the start because he had the wrong lineup playing the first 15 games.
I think deep down he knows this team isn't good enough but he wants to win on his terms and frankly I don't think he wants to put in the extra effort these days. I give him credit for getting more involved with Judah but I think it was more out of desperation. He badly needed a win to stave off the critics.

Not all of them. And those same coaches, they thought we would be really good this year. And you might have missed the part where the coaches are looking to the following year. That in my opinion is insane. You don't write seasons off. Guys leave and players get hurt.
Thank you dash for the info/insight.. Yeah if that actually is the case then its also a bit hypocritical of the staff. I mean, JB went out and grabbed JB3 to start and play a head if Benny last year who was rated far higher than any of the current forwards coming in after they had already picked up Cole. He also gave the lion share of the minutes to other forwards last year instead of playing Benny and working on Developing him during a losing season.

With the clock ticking and 12 seats taken it seems the priority is a backup center. Could be tough to find good player willing to be a backup.

Disappointing. The game has changed. Portal recruiting is equal if not more important than HS kids.

This years tournament saw older teams generally succeed more than previous years. And you could see it in the style of play. Stronger defenders, more physical - almost a throwback to the 80s/90s.

The portal has changed the dynamic instantaneously.
Time to abandon HS and 100% focus on the portal

Blah. I don’t want to root for a team of nomads. Wish the portal didn’t even exist.
It's new so all these kids who grew up with participation trophies will try it because they think life if sunnier on the other side of the street.

Eventually they will realize that it only works for maybe 50% of the kids and hopefully their "handlers" will see the big picture and advise them as such.

IMO there's 3 ways to build a good college team.

1. Go all in on one and dones. (Duke)
2. Go all in on the transfer portal to mix with elite talent already on the roster(UK/Carolina/Kansas/Arkansas)
3. Build a roster through HS recruiting and Player development(Villanova is the best at this..Virginia...etc)

I always thought the third option was the best option for Syracuse. The problem is we have had so much turnover due to poor roster management we lack the veterans to supplement the young guys next year. Nova regularly starts juniors and seniors while somehow getting guys to wait their turn. The Gillespies, Archiadiacanos, Moores, Eric Paschall's, Saddiq Bey's, Divencenzos, Caleb Daniels, etc of the world were not can't miss prospects. They were bottom 100 or out of the top 100 recruits. They've had a few high ranked guys, but they were more the exception than the rule.

We went hard after DiVincenzo. He was definitely Top 50-75. Paschall was a transfer from Fordham. Moore was a Top 55 recruit.

Villanova has more talent than you’re giving them credit for. But I do agree, they develop. And get guys to buy in. That’s the big difference and that falls on JB & staff.

We passed on Divencenzo because we prioritized Malachi and Frank Howard. He was ranked 124th overall on the 247 composite according to their site now.

Moore was 57th.

Most coaches got into the profession because they love developing players, fitting their strengths, weaknesses into a cohesive hopefully winning team, like pieces of a puzzle. They look at players and not only judge what a player brings to the court initially but also evaluates and foresees what the player can become with work, development and practice over time. Tough times for those coaches who love those aspects of the profession.

To piggyback on this point from Jake. We finally have 2 Live periods in April again, along with 2 in July. Something college coaches were begging for pre-portal but this weekend our staff has spoken to close to 10 schools who have told us they won’t be out this weekend for the first April Live Period because they are hosting transfers this weekend.

The game has changed so much for HS student-athletes and not in a good way.

That’s awful.

More high school kids heading to community, junior colleges or jumping to the non college route (but I imagine just a select few) - NBA G League or Overtime Elite then? Wonder what all the ramifications will be?
