2022 Yankees Season

I love Judge and am so thrilled about the magical season he has had. I have grown tired of people misrepresenting this as the “real record.” Also, we never care this much about American League or National League records. Without looking it up, can you name who has the longest game hitting streak in the NL or who played the most consecutive games in the NL? People want to erase the steroid era, but they can’t. MLB and the MLBPA are not off the hook yet. Bonds is still the home run king.
Bonds is not the Home Run King.

Judge is.

until the idiots put Bonds in the Hall, none of his 'records' count.

for if they did...hed be in the HOF.

to be clear, once again...i am pro Bonds to the HOF.

Fair enough, but I'd guess a big reason Judge has such a following is because he's a genuine nice guy, where Bonds was a consummate jackass. Corollary to why I always liked Jeff Kent. :)

So when all these guys getting today off plus the next 5 days go hitless in game #1 of ALDS Boone can say they have to shake off the rust. There is no reason Judge couldn't DH today and get 2 ABs and go out after 3-4 innings. Same for some others. Gleyber was sick the last few days. So he won't have played in nearly 2 weeks.
I think they will get plenty of at bats in simulated games during the time off. Not sure 1 or 2 plate appearances today is going to make any difference whatsoever.

Without looking them up, it's Pete Rose with his 44 game hit streak. Consecutive games played in the NL, I'm pretty sure that it's Steve "Not My Padre" Garvey, or possibly Billy Williams. I know that they both had long streaks, but I'm leaning towards Garvey.

They could also get hurt. Do you think there would be that much of a difference having five days rather than six days between games?
About a 20% difference.

I know that post WWII, greenies were rampant in baseball. It's curious that these aren't considered performance enhancing. Also, slightly less than 1/2 of suspended players were pitchers.
Baseball needs to get over itself. Gaylord Perry used performance enhancing substances all the way to the HOF.

Maybe they are trying to get some reserve guys some ABs and innings and what better time to do that than in a game that doesn’t matter.

Greenies vs anabolic steroids. Same thing. Pretty much same physiologic effects on the body. there’s no greater proof of the power of steroids than the case control experiments of bonds / sosa / McGwire themselves. I’ll throw in Brady Anderson who suddenly hit 50 HR one year.

Luis Gonzalez, 57 HRs in 2001. Never hit more than 31 before or after that season, usually somewhere in the low 20s or below.

Bret Boone: The poster child for PEDs

I wouldn't discount the juicing of the ball either. I suspect it plays a significant role

I would say it is part steroids, part ball itself

For example, in 2001 (Bonds peak) there were ~5700 HRs in the league
-Bonds and Sosa both hit 60+
-7 players hit 49+

Fast forward to the 2010s, HRs jumped from a low of 4186 (2014) to 6776 (2019). With the crackdown on PEDs, I think that was mostly the ball.

Finally those differences help boost the "specialness" of Judge's year
-Judge 62 HRs
-No one hits 50+
-3 players hit 40+ (and two were exactly 40)

That gap is simply amazing. That hasn't seen since Babe Ruth's time

I agree 100%. Baseball can't have it both ways. If MLB wants to say Bonds is HR king, then they have to vote him in HOF. Selig ruined everything but now it's up to Manfred to make it right.
