2023 National Signing Day Thread

This has not been a great offseason. Outstanding DC leaves to be a DC somewhere else. Lost two good defensive backs and lost best two recruits to a flip. A bunch of low level three stars. And the transfers from other schools haven’t produced anything. Losing multiple starters to the NFL. Sorry I usually try to be positive but nexts years team doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as good as the 2022 team.

Oregon loses a QB to UCLA this week and then flips a QB from Baylor. The kid had been committed to Baylor for a year.

Yeah this stuff happens to all the big schools. If we’re going to try to recruit 4-5 stars we have to be prepared for a dog fight and have kids flip. Tons of SEC and B10 teams have had top recruits flip on them just in the last 2 weeks.

it's a little easier to swallow losing a kid here and there when you have a class full of highly recruited players. Typically hurts us more but Babers has also done a good job over the years to hold onto kids. But it's inevitable.

I think it would also be easier to lose a 4 or 5 star if we were actually flipping some TO us. It's a very one way street when talking that level of recruits

I actually feel the opposite of next years team. I think they will be better over all. Yes it hurts to loose Duce and Carter but we picked up two good replacements that will be here for spring. Oline will change but we have good pieces and some players coming in. Coordinator changed but ended up being a wash or upgrade. With GS, the receiver, Allen I feel we will be stronger on O. D will still be good.

If the line can stay healthier - DL specifically and the OL can improve. That will improve everyone else’s game even with talent losses.

It is puts and takes for 2023. We lose some genuine stars (our best in many seasons) in Tucker, Bergeron, Williams and Jones. Carter and Chestnut were nearly at the same level as those 4. We get back some of the guys we lost early (Lockett, Isiah Jones) and the young DLs will return stronger.

These flips just don’t stress me. It does make me wonder if we need to really back off the high school recruiting, though. What’s the point of IDing talent early? Maybe reposition what we do as connecting with the TOP players, knowing 30% of them will wash out and we can leverage that relationship down the line. Put the resources into that and portal management.

Overall, I think Cuse is going to be in better shape along the DL and OL.

The QB room is still Shrader, Lamson, and CDRW. I can't wait to see what Lamson does as backup this year and if he takes the reigns in 2024

Allen at tailback is gonna nail it

I Jones and O Gadsden are back. What's not to like about this offense? Jackson and Sellers are gonna regret not coming here

Defense is retooled with potential, but some unknown commodities (at CB for sure). But if Rocky Long still has the magic touch, I think defense might be a wash between this year and last year

It’s good to build the relationship early I think.

Lots of things are good but there’s finite time and resources. We’re effectively doing the work for the bigger programs who poach the talent. We need to evolve how we operate to keep up and make the most of the current environment

Another, possibly hotter take (depending on your vision).

The two guys that we appear to have lost were the two guys who wear glasses all the time.

We should never recruit players who wear glasses again.

;)

I haven't commented on losing LaNorris yet.

Will do that here.

Yes, it stinks. Coach Beck was super loyal to him and he did not reciprocate. That kind of thing happens with entitled teenagers. Especially ones that grew up in a football crazed SEC state where most of the people he knows worship the state school. This is really Clemson's fault. That loss to South Carolina legitimated that program and gave them a lot of momentum.

But here is the thing. LaNorris is a bad fit for the offense Beamer hired as his new OC. And South Carolina's roster is loaded with QBs whose skill set is a fit with the pro style offense that failed bonehead is going to try and install there.

No doubt in my mind the South Carolina offense is going to struggle with this clown in charge. No doubt in my mind he will try anyone but the dual threat QB to try and get things moving.

No doubt in my mind that LaNorris is going to realize he made a huge mistake and will transfer out after the first semester of fall 2023 and look for a program that runs a scheme that suits his skill set.

He belongs at Syracuse. And that is the place he will end up at. I expect we will still get him. Yes, he will lose a year of training in the Syracuse system and that will hurt him but he will still come in with the starting job at QB wide open in 2024 (after Garrett graduates) and will still have the spring and summer to learn the system and get ready to do damage.
If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours

I didn’t explain that well sorry. I think it’s good to build the relationship early because even if they don’t sign out of high school might get them from the portal in a few years.

Well, that was a quick signing day. It's a little past 10am EST.

Neither of the guys that didn’t follow through on their commitment impact next years team one bit.

Sellers would have been one of three guys competing for the job two seasons from now.

Jackson would have been a very nice add to the DL or OL, but the program is bringing in multiple guys to add to what’s here. But he was far from a must have.

As for DC, Long more than makes up for the departure.

Transfers - two good players that you would love to keep. But that’s it to date - two. There’s no mass exodus. The program has won the portal wars to date.

NFL - Bergeron has played for four seasons, the only reason he has any eligibility is Covid. Tucker was always leaving, he’s played three, Williams and Jones have both been three year starters. It’s not a negative for the program to get four guys drafted.

They have done a good job this year recruiting addressing immediate needs and bringing in bigger guys on the lines. Continue to improve team speed.

They’ve done a very good job of managing the challenges put in front of them. They should get credit for freeing up roster spots.
