2023 National Signing Day Thread

Class rankings could be taken with grain of salt before, now with portal movement they mean even less .
Sure, there will may some gems in there, but the overall depth is not good. We saw that this year.

I also don’t take it with a grain of salt. There is a correlation between poor recruiting & losing seasons.

Yeah exactly. There’s aspects of rankings the validity of can be debated but as a whole, statistically schools with higher rated classes end do better than schools with lower rated classes.

Outliers are outliers, bringing up the 1 zero star QB in the history of CFB doesn’t prove rankings are worthless.

There’s not a correlation in the current environment. Assessing signing day absent portal adds is less than useful in predicting anything.

We're a developmental program. Not sure why people still have trouble figuring that out. New coaches, NIL, transfer portal etc. won't change that in my opinion.

One wholly unscientific thing I noticed when I used to follow recruiting much more closely is that a ~.85+ rating on the main recruiting site seemed to be a sweet spot as to who our best players ended up being after their careers played out.

Anyway, we get who we get and check back in 2-4 years to see how it works out. Predicting these things can be fun but is extremely difficult.

Having said that, I have very little confidence that our current WR group is at the level it needs to be and am surprised that has yet to be addressed by the staff. Hopeful that the scholarships left will be used to pursue a couple transfer WR.

If you want to add the portal there as well, then go ahead. You’re not going to convince me that there isn’t a correlation between recruiting rankings and performance. There are outliers that can be attributed to factors such as poor coaching I guess.

Lots of teeth gnashing on here, but I think it’s a pretty good class. For whatever reason (orange tinted glasses maybe) I think a lot of these guys are really going to contribute. If we get Sellers that’s the cherry on top. But the main thing is we have Shrader for next year. And one year in college football is now like four years what with the musical chairs transfer game.

I'm not excited at all about this HS class as a whole, but am happy with the JC/transfers we've brought in. In some of the previous classes, there's been at least a handful of guys to be excited about. In this class, I love Perry and like Ike, ZMG, but many of the rest are sleeper/project types.

No one is saying there is no correlation. Certainly Georgia and Bama with all 4 and 5 star recruits are likely to do better then 15 3 star group. I have watched and noticed after you get past the major football factories the recruiting rankings are a crapshoot at best. If the rankings were so important WF would be crap years in and and year out. The Bearcats would never get a sniff of the top 20 let alone the final 4.

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but even if Sellers and Jackson don’t flip, Syracuse has the last class in the ACC again.

They have a lot of work to do. Hopefully they can get a few more guys from the portal.
Looks like there are a bunch of Jobitys in this class.

take those kind of kids all day everyday

2-4 years? No one will be around if they exceed expectations

Outside of the ‘21 season, Wake has been a mediocre program with a great coach. Heck even that year, they beat Old dominion, Norfolk St, Army and a lot of bad ACC teams.

Yes. 2 years puts them at RS frosh. year and 4 years puts them at RS junior year. During that time you can see who worked out and who didn't.

Til then its just fun message board banter. Go back 3 or 4 years and look at some of our past message board recruiting diamonds in the rough and you'll understand better what I'm saying. Some develop and some don't. Not alot of sure things at the level of player we're recruiting.

Basically, with the type of player we recruit most are under the you just have to wait and see column. That's the way I see it anyway and I used to follow recruiting pretty heavily in past years.

Neither of the guys that didn’t follow through on their commitment impact next years team one bit.

Sellers would have been one of three guys competing for the job two seasons from now.

Jackson would have been a very nice add to the DL or OL, but the program is bringing in multiple guys to add to what’s here. But he was far from a must have.

As for DC, Long more than makes up for the departure.

Transfers - two good players that you would love to keep. But that’s it to date - two. There’s no mass exodus. The program has won the portal wars to date.

NFL - Bergeron has played for four seasons, the only reason he has any eligibility is Covid. Tucker was always leaving, he’s played three, Williams and Jones have both been three year starters. It’s not a negative for the program to get four guys drafted.

They have done a good job this year recruiting addressing immediate needs and bringing in bigger guys on the lines. Continue to improve team speed.

They’ve done a very good job of managing the challenges put in front of them. They should get credit for freeing up roster spots.
Nice post. The program as a whole is having a good year. I wasn't displeased with 7-5 and the coaching changes seem graceful. We have a lot of linemen coming in, a huge concern on both sides of the ball. I'm pretty optimistic about our RB's and QB's, too. There's much to like about the potential for 2023. I'm always hopeful we'll have great playmakers somewhere in the mix. Shrader, Gadsden, any one of the four RB's I think that will compete for touches, and hopefully a WR or two come to mind. We'll have some on defense, too. Hopefully the coaches chose wisely.

MISSED THAT YES OF COURSE. TWO FOUR STARS PLUS LAMSON!
