2023 National Signing Day Thread

I’ve been following recruiting since I’ve been on here, although a little less in depth since there’s a kid running around the house. But I don’t remember a class or too many other classes with the size coming in to start with that this class has overall. We usually get a lot of kids we hope can add significant size as a 2+ yr project. This is a very good class just physically being ready, maybe not all ready to contribute but already ready to take the next steps now.

the roster progression since Dino got here

more mac than acc with some good players

2018, an upperclassman heavy roster, little to no injuries, impact qb that lasted the season

as he has gotten here the roster has gotten more acc skill wise, but not size. Team speed has been very good, but the roster has been undersized - big car/little car as he discussed today.

last two cycle, bringing in bigger guys. look at sparrow and McDonald next two jones and Wax. Ol kids coming not only have frames , but mass. Dl, ends and tackles all 6-4 to 6-6.

still want to play fast, rather have small and fast than big and slow, but bigger without sacrificing speed is where they are heading.

Our recruiting rankings always stink. We're always near the bottom of the ACC.

Recruiting class talk here is always the same. Some people think it's a disaster, some say 'we got who we wanted', and some talk about improving athleticism, etc.

At the end of the day I think the ability of the program to be more of a 7-8 win team than a 4-5 win team is in the portal. Who we get from HS ain't ever changing much.

Iv been working all day any major surprises or developments? I know we had a couple out of the blue last year

Yes. 2 years puts them at RS frosh. year and 4 years puts them at RS junior year. During that time you can see who worked out and who didn't.

Til then its just fun message board banter. Go back 3 or 4 years and look at some of our past message board recruiting diamonds in the rough and you'll understand better what I'm saying. Some develop and some don't. Not alot of sure things at the level of player we're recruiting.

Basically, with the type of player we recruit most are under the you just have to wait and see column. That's the way I see it anyway and I used to follow recruiting pretty heavily in past years.
I get it, but with a break out year bigger programs come fishing. Guys might not make it 2 years in this new world

Miami has the #3 overall recruiting class in the country. He is absolutely killing it
He absolutely gets the credit cuz dem the rules, but Miami NIL collective is killing it. Cristobal is an average coach at best

They have 8,000 fans at their games and are a .500 program. But the bags and bags and bags are a thing of beauty for Mario. So there we are

No one is saying there is no correlation. Certainly Georgia and Bama with all 4 and 5 star recruits are likely to do better then 15 3 star group. I have watched and noticed after you get past the major football factories the recruiting rankings are a crapshoot at best. If the rankings were so important WF would be crap years in and and year out. The Bearcats would never get a sniff of the top 20 let alone the final 4.
There is also a huge difference between evaluating players and developing them. Fickell and Clawson are obviously 2 of the best. Name me 3 WR's Babers has recruited and developed in 7 years. Same with QB, and OL.

I certainly agree about his coaching ability. Still with that talent they have to stumble into 7-8 wins a season.

So objectively where does this class rank? When I hear about our recruits and transfers I get hopeful. So it’s disheartening that all projections show us almost dead last in the ACC. Maybe we’re addressing needs, but relative to our peers, are we just falling further behind?

I understand the desire to stay positive but at some point the numbers don’t lie when you put everything in perspective of history.

Which will likely get him fired in a few years. Did they just cheat better in 2000? Surprised they haven’t made it back to the top consistently given their $$ flow and local talent.

I think they developed their players back then and always had top classes. He cleaned up this year. Think he got three 5 stars all at key positions including the #2 QB in country and top OT in the country.

When you include HS kids, JUCOs, and Transfer Portal players I'm not sure how you rate them anymore. I am pleased with the class overall. I think an impact WR would be nice, a rangy safety, and maybe one more LB.

I really like what we did to address the Oline. Reed imo is perhaps the most important recruit in the class at the Center position and it's always nice to beat programs the caliber of Oregon for a kid like him.

I think the staff did a nice job of filling immediate needs while also taking some really athletic HS kids who fit what they do. Also, most of the players we landed had solid P5 offers which to me anyways is way more important than stars.

In conclusion, none of us will truly know anything for a while.

Pleased in comparison to who though? Certainly not our conference peers. I'll just say it. I like the potential of the JC guys, and a couple HS guys like Perry, ZMG, etc, but imo it's a net loss from what we lost in the portal (Linton, Carter, Duce) to what we got. Winning battles to get guys like Sellers are huge deals. Adding a QB with his potential to a limited QB room is the only thing that is going to continue to elevate the program. QB's win games. Hitting on a high potential one can help bring in better classes down the road.

Class rankings could be taken with grain of salt before, now with portal movement they mean even less .
Let’s be honest, we are ranked someplace like 75th nationally according to ESPN and a couple others and that’s with sellers, say what u want but that’s not impressive by any stretch of the imagination regardless of how things turn out still underwhelming.

Well, for starters I definitely think more of our QB room than you do. I agree winning battles for players like Sellers is important but with the way the portal is now I'm not nearly as worried as I used to be.

I'm pleased with what we added to our current roster, with who we promoted to OC, with who we hired at DC. I also don't think the door is closed on Duce returning. Carter is the only one that we lost to the portal that I think really hurts, but I am pretty bullish on Gould.

Again, none of us will know anything for a while. Fun to speculate though.

I’ve been very critical of our recruiting since Dino arrived, but to be fair, Wake Forest is near the bottom every year too. They always red shirt every recruit and it’s worked for them. Both programs are developmental schools. Dino has developed kids. Case in point, with four players headed to the NFL next year. Unfortunately, we maybe losing six of our best players next year. Do we have enough roster talent to replace them?

and they won 4 or 5 games this year? Their recruiting is always overrated, the recruiting "experts (sic)" think this is the 1990s

Yeah what’s up with a kid being a three star and then turns into a four star just because he signed with a certain school? Anyone want to clue me in on how that works?

Some Florida kid doing a prep year at Milford snuck out to Purdue.

Everyone else stayed within 240 miles of home.

And Penn State / Maryland / Rutgers are all closer to NYC/LI than Syracuse is.

Probably more accurate to say that the out of control UM boosters are.

They have a couple of billionaires that are determined to buy a NC. Don't think that is going to happen with MC in charge but they are definitely getting attention from the major college football powers these days.
