2023 Preseason Camp Thread

Gill and Reed are from Houston?

Oh, wow, Gill is from Atascocita. How did I not remember that? And had no idea Reed was from Houston.

We actually have three guys from the Houston Area.
  1. Jakobie Seabourn, Safety, Cypress Ranch HS, Houston, Texas (Santa Barbara CC, CA)
  2. J'Onre Reed, Center, Eisenhower High School, Houston Texas (Hutchinson CC, KS)
  3. Darrell Gill, Receiver, Atascocita High School, Houston, Texas

Is this a coincidence or does Syracuse have eyes on Houston?

I always thought we found Seabourn because Dino has contacts in the San Diego area.
  • We are recruiting Isaiah Buxton a good CB in the San Diego Area (Arizona commit) and I figured someone told us he had a brother we should take a look at. The brother is Berry Buxton who was at Santa Barbara City College with Seabourn. Obviously, we signed both Buxton and Seabourn. With the Pac-12 being obliterated do we have a chance to flip the younger Buxton?

Dino Babers is very familiar with Southern California.
  • Grew up in San Diego. Attended Morse high School.
  • Coached at San Diego State, 1994.
  • Coached at UCLA, 2004-07.
And Sir Rocky Long has an extensive history in Southern California.
  • UCLA, Defensive Coordinator, 1996-97.
  • San Diego State, Defensive Coordinator, 2009-2010.
  • San Diego State, Head Coach, 2011-19.
Coach Johnson also has ties to Southern California.
  • He played at Mesa CC in San Diego.
  • Coached with the San Diego Chargers for two seasons.
  • Coached at UCLA for a year.
Coach Beck is a native Californian.
  • Prepped at Hueneme High School in Ventura County.
  • Played at College of the Canyons Community College before going to BYU.

Sorry for rambling... We have three new players from the Houston, Texas area.

Doesn’t Syracuse have direct flights to Houston? When going out of the region I think direct flight locations make the most sense. A lot easier for families to travel.

Just Dallas currently. But with Micron etc who knows what kind of growth we could see with airport routes.

From someone who flies up there, no they do not. Have to fly in through Chicago, Washington or Newark.

Weren’t there more direct flights in the 80s when Carrier and GE were huge?

Two JUCOs and a guy the staff took a flier on late in the cycle isn't a reflection of a shift in core recruiting strategy.

I listened to a 3 hour ACC / college football talk show on sirius yesterday and not 1 mention of Syracuse. Clemson, FSU, …..NC State, Duke, VT, UNC and even BC all got mention. BC got mention as they think they’ll exceed expectations this season (mostly from a convo with Hafley. David Hale from espn was on and talked about the conference too. No mention of Syracuse or Shrader or OG. Nothing.

Not surprising. You have to prove you're not a one-hit wonder (which SU certainly will).

I bet the prevailing view is that SU won its first 6 last year and then came back to earth.

Some of the questions asked were who’s the team that will surprise or exceed. Who’s the 3 win to 9 win team etc. when talking about Clemson no mention if there’s a game that Clemson could slip…imo it’s at Syracuse. These are things that should at least get a token mention I would think especially when talking league QBs.

Fluck em. The entire conference can hold Dino’s dong when we beat Clemson and Mack Brown’s old ass in back to back weeks.
