2024-25 Coaching Carousel

Why are you panicking that we won’t be able to get him next season? Let him move from a low major to a mid major level and see how he does, and then we’ll get him after next season if he succeeds. If he does, he’s a perfect fit for SU being from New York State and having coached at Buffalo for years.

I am not freaking out. It will depend on what the buyout is in the contract. I don't think it takes us out of the running if he wants Syracuse unless the buyout is massive because we know Syracuse isn't paying a big buyout.

really wanted Hodgson to be the coach after Red. Now I’m watching Bucky McMillan, Matt Langel and Bryce Drew

He’s not going to sign a contract with a massive buyout, and I believe we’ll pay a buyout if we really want the guy.

really wanted Hodgson to be the coach as you after Red. Now I’m looking at Bucky McMillan, Matt Langel and Bryce Drew

Same here I wanted Hodgson. I’d love to have Matt Langel too. We know he can coach. What he has done at Colgate is miraculous.
Only doubts would be recruiting but then you think about a guy like Todd Golden who had no big time recruiting experience and now killing it at Florida.

So wish we were part of this coaching change cycle. Hopefully Hodgson doesn’t have a large buyout at USF.

I don’t like SU basketball relegated to irrelevance. We’re getting very close if things don’t change.
We're already there. With our program's ineptitude and continued slide, along with the ACC's downturn, we are completely irrelevant on a national scale. The only time we get talked about is how bad we are or how good the BE used to be.

Rick Pitino the younger will be taking over Villanova apparently. Not sure if it has been confirmed yet.

Edit: Change in plans, lol.

I don't worry about losing potential coaches - next year there will be plenty of candidates available who we can select from. Nature of the beast.
This year did appear to be quite strong though.

There will certainly be good candidates in a year, though not sure there will be nearly as many with proven success.

What matters in a hypothetical coaching search in 2026: Talent evaluation and procurement (partially a function of NIL situation), roster management, game-planning, non-con scheduling (especially if the ACC is still struggling nationally), ability to make adjustments, ability to communicate effectively to players, your staff and the media, having a modern philosophy.

What doesn't matter in a coaching search in 2026 (or matters very little compared to even 3 years ago): Being able to develop players over 3-4 years, ties to grassroots organizations.

Being able to develop players over 3-4 years

So for a program like ours to be successful and to maintain success we are going to have to figure this part out. We can't rely on the portal to get a new roster every year we aren't an SEC powerhouse. We need to have a coach create a culture that makes our talented Freshmen and Sophomores want to stay 2/3 more years and play for you and the school. This is why Red getting Donnie to stay was a big deal.

Syracuse isn't going to be successful trying to buy the best players from the portal every year. (Like Dent and Gwath won't give us a look) They need to develop and keep talent. Freeman - White - Anthony - Fennell etc. Then, from year to year, use the portal to fill in the holes with upper classmen, etc.

I guess I should clarify - Maybe not being able to develop players over 3-4 years, but needing 3-4 years to develop players.

No more relying on "projects,” even for bench roles.

I think even the SEC powerhouses will need to identify and retain talent. They have generally gone after underclassmen who have shown ability in order to keep them for 2 years. The loss of the COVID senior cohort dried up the player pool for this offseason. There won't always be enough top-end players for all of the teams that would like them every offseason. There will still need to be talent development.

We may not even be a player next year for a new coach. If Red wins 20 games somehow and we make the tournament he will probably get a 10yr contract extension.
I so hope we don’t end up in a Dino Babers situation here. But if we luck out and get some decent transfers it could be just that.
